6 Hats to Wear When Working with Programming

I was speaking with Markeitng & Automaqtion Guru Ryan Wells and he mentioned the Six Thinking Hats by Edward de Bono.  I liked the concept so much I applied the idea to working in AutoHotkey.   Each hat has different implcations, with different considerations and goals.  It’s important to realize that they often conflict with one another thus making it a complex thing to manage.

Having said that, by “putting on” the different hats  you can, overall, be more likely to achieve your end-goal.

The 6 Hats to wear when Programming

  1. The Business Value Hat (Gold) – Focus on project management and profitability:
    • Cost-benefit analysis of features
    • Time management and project timelines
    • Market demand and potential revenue streams
  1. The User Experience Hat (Blue) – Consider the end-user perspective:
    • Hotkey and HotString design
    • GUI design and usability
    • Error handling and user feedback
  1. The Release Planning Hat (Purple) – Plan versions and new functionality:
    • Minimum Viable Product (MVP) definition
    • Feature prioritization and roadmapping
    • Version control and release management
    • Iterative development strategy
  1. The Debug Hat (Red) – Identify and solve potential issues:
    • Error checking and logging
    • Testing strategies
    • Troubleshooting techniques
  1. The Optimization Hat (Yellow) – Look for opportunities to improve performance:
    • Script execution speed & Memory usage
    • Efficient use of AutoHotkey-specific features
    • Refactoring code
  1. The Innovation Hat (Green) – Explore creative solutions and new ideas:
    • Novel uses of AutoHotkey features
    • Integration with other technologies
    • Pushing the boundaries of what AutoHotkey can do
