🅰️HK Lesson #17: A quick Introduction to GUIs in 🅰️utoHotkey.

Hello,

Creating a custom AutoHotkey script to do what you want is AMAZING! Most of the time I just have it launch by triggering a hotkey or have it always running and use a few hotkeys to do a few different things.

But some scripts have a dynamic aspect to them that I’m frequently changing and want a simple way to use various options (without having to remember a crazy number of Hotkeys). That’s when adding a simple GUI (Graphical User Interface) incredibly helpful.

Adding a basic GUI to your script is easier than you think❗

In this video I show how I adapted my script to include a v1 GUI with some check boxes.

Years ago I tried really to get into GUIs with AutoHotkey and I thought “Oh wow, this is confusing! AutoHotkey is a great language however their GUIs suck because it’s very complicated”.

For about a year I was regularly going to Python Meetups and talking with Python programmers. I was trying to use Kivy and Tkinter (python libraries) to create GUIs in Python and would ask a Python developer to help me and their answer was always “Sorry, I don’t do GUIs”.

It was a few years later that I met Maestrith, the author of AHK Studio, and he helped tutor me on GUIs and explained that it’s really that GUIS are just a complex topic. Because AutoHotkey leverages the Windows API they are much simpler than in other languages.

A few years later and I teamed up with Isaias / RaptorX and worked with him to create our “GUIs are Easy” course which is an amazing introduction to GUIs in AutoHotkey. I encourage you to read more about the course. If you’d like to purchase it you can get 20% off by using “OBDGuisAreEasy20Perc” in the coupon during checkout (or just clicking here for v1or here for v2).

You can also check out this mini-tutorial on GUIS in v2 Isaias gave us while we were live streaming on YouTube.

P.S. GUIs in AutoHotkey use the most robust controls on the planet, however, they take a little getting used to, which is why they are frequently a conversation topic in our AHK Hero calls❗
