🅰️HK Lesson #5: What to do when you need help with 🅰utoHotkey.

Hello,

AutoHotkey is an amazing language to begin to learn, however, as with all things, when you’re entirely new to something it can be very confusing how to solve problems.

But don’t worry, there are a lot of great, free, resources out there. On top of being an easy to learn language, AutoHotkey has amazing resources & places to get help.

The very first place I recommend you try and get help is simply looking at the Documentation. If you’re using a solid editor you should be able to highlight a word and hit F1 which will pull-up the local AHK Help file.

Expect to be very familiar with the documentation. I typically jump to the bottom and review their working examples as I learn better by seeing an example instead of reading how to do something.

Of course you can look for the topic on The-Automator and I have over 1,400 videos on my YouTube channel. I’ve lead over 60 webinars on AutoHotkey.

Two great places to search are the AutoHotkey forums as well as StackOverflow (the link I just gave will filter for posts tagged as AutoHotkey). In this video I show a cool tool I wrote that uses Google to search many of these places for you.

The AutoHotkey SubReddit and Discord are also places where not only can you search for support, AutoHotkey users are very actively “hanging out” and helping people. Just keep in mind the person helping you may be a very beginner or super advanced. When you’re new to AutoHotkey it is hard to tell the difference and you might get some well-intentioned but bad advice.

If that’s not enough places for you, check out my “Ultimate AutoHotkey resources” page.

One thing I’ve been suggesting for years is having a “coding buddy”. Find someone else that you can go to when you’re stuck. The really cool thing is: they don’t even have to be a programmer. Often just explaining what you’re doing and how you’re stuck will reveal the problem.

Lastly there’s the AHK Hero group which offers several live weekly calls which are not streamed to YouTube and give you access to a private Telegram group where Isaias Baez, Irfan and I are often able to help within a very short time frame. The members have really been enjoying this and I encourage you to take a look at their testimonials. The Hero program is an incredible deal and our members love the program!
