Text file explorer-Determine file headers & delimiters without opening file

Text file explorer

I often work with large text files in which the file extension (.txt, .dat, .csv, .tab) doesn’t always indicate what type of delimiter is used in the file.  When the file is small, I’ll typically just “pop” it open in SciTE / Notepad.  Large files (anything over 20 megs) often take a fair amount of time to read and very large files ( a gig or more) will often run into out of memory issues.

On top of wanting to know the delimiter, I also frequently want to know what fields / Headers are in the file.   This normally means I have to open it in a text editor or Excel and review.  I wrote the below Text File Explorer in AutoHotkey script to simplify the above.  I can highlight a file from Windows Explorer and quickly detect the type of delimiter plus display headers if I care to.

Remove duplicates from CSV files in a flash with an AutoHotKey script

Remove-DuplicatesIn email marketing I am frequently having to remove duplicates.   I typically used Excel for this but I did it so frequently I built a small script to automate the process.

The program requires a CSV file and utilizes Microsoft’s Component Object Model to open Excel and examine the headers for a field named “email”.  Once it finds it it removes duplicate email addresses and saves them as a new file in the same folder with the naming showing how many rows are present.   This greatly reduces the amount of work needed to do the job.
This should ease the removal of duplicates from CSV files.

Use an API for Sales Prospecting- Automate finding sales leads

Black Bottle 2API for Sales Prospecting

I have a lot of friends that work in sales and spend an awful lot of time (manually) trying to find new sales leads.  There are a lot of sources out there (LinkedIn, Hoovers, InfoUSA, etc. ) which allow you to use a web browser for searching through their database.  Others open up access to their data by way of an webservice API.

The Clearbit prospect API allows you to find people and bring back demographics as well as email address.  The video demonstrates two examples where I of the Propector and Autocomplete Clearbit APIs.

Standardized naming convention via SharePoint

Standardized naming conventionsStandardized naming conventions are a must for consistent email metrics.

In this post I demonstrated how I used a regular expression to automate email metrics.  I thought I’d create a short video demonstrating how we were able to use SharePoint to automate the creation of our campaign names.  Pre-SharePoint our clients would create and enter names manually.  This was a nightmare!

Standardized naming conventions

This video demonstrates how we managed to get SharePoint to ease the creation of our naming conventions.
