AutoHotkey News 2024/04/18- My beliefs and what I stand for

Howdy

I want people to have a very clear understanding of who I am and what I believe in.  It ends up saving time for everyone involved.  So, to put it out in the open here are a few of my beliefs:

  • I believe in Equal Opportunity (not equal Outcomes)
  • I’m pro: Life; Gun; Business; Capitalists; Free Markets & Unconditional free-speech
  • I believe in personal responsibility & that charities, not the government, should help people. I often help people but it is MY choice, not some arbitrary gov’t that buys votes by giving away my money.
  • I’m a Libertarian and don’t trust either the Republicans or Democrats & wish all had term limits
  • I have no place for Racism in my life however I also think most people misuse the word and should probably be using “prejudice” in its place
  • I’m proud that I’m uncomfortably, sometimes painfully, honest.
  • I do what I say and I stand by my word.  Always!
  • My favorite authors are Thomas Sowell, Julian Simon, Ayn Rand, Dan Kennedy, and Jordon Peterson
  • I believe students should repay their loans; as I did
  • I have zero debt & my vehicles look like they lost a demolition derby (but they get you there)
  • I believe in myself and that man can achieve anything he puts his mind to
  • I believe wokeness is a cancer that is killing our society
  • I want more 1776 and less 1984
  • I believe my time is the most valuable thing I have & am willing to spend💲to buy it back
  • I believe Men & Women are different & that biological men should not be in women’s sports
  • While 10th, Not coveting your neighbor’s possessions is my favorite commandment
  • Except for a few people, I don’t care what others think of me

Sadly many people in the U.S. have become completely intolerant of other people’s opinions.  I am NOT one of those people.  I wrote the above to help you understand who I am and, if you’re one of those people that can’t stand working with people that don’t share your opinion, feel free to unsubscribe.  Believe me, you’re doing us both a favor!

If the above doesn’t send you running away screaming, reach out to me by replying to this email and tell me which of the above meant the most to you.

Introducing AHK Mastery

Quite a while back a few AHK Hero members asked if we offered a “subscription” model for our courses (instead of purchasing each one separately they could have access to all courses).  While I liked the idea, I didn’t feel we had enough courses to justify the model.   Well I’m excited to say, with the launch of our newest course (see below), I decided to create the AHK Mastery program which allows client’s to subscribe (either monthly or annually) to our courses.  You can learn more about the AHK Mastery program from this video or on this page.

🆕Intro to VS code Course🏎️

Hopefully you’re aware that v1 is now deprecated and is not expecting any “official” updates.  While the exe is sure to be around for a while, we highly recommend you switch to v2.

We’ve made our own version of AHK Studio that can edit v2 files however it does crash unexpectedly.   And we’ve done our best to patch SciTE4AutoHotkey however AHK Hero members continue to have ongoing issues where it changes the file associations of .ahk files thus, currently, we only recommend VS code for working with both AHK v1 & v2.

VS code is a true “IDE” Integrated Development Environment and is the “Ferrari” of tools for developing programs.  It’s more powerful than what 90% of us need however, currently it’s the best we have for working with both v1 and v2 versions of AutoHotkey.

We discuss our new course, and some of the specific benefits of VS code, in this video.

Using GIT with VS Code

Our above Intro to VS course touches on using GIT but we don’t dive into it as, we’re really teaching you how to configure, setup, and use VS Code.

If you’re working with other people, or releasing various versions of your scripts, I’d highly recommend you learn how to work with GIT.  In this video we cover how to revert to earlier versions of your code.

API calls are Easy

API calls are a constant topic in our weekly AHK Hero calls.  While the topic itself is vast, it can be pretty easy to show a simple example.  In this video I showed how easy it is to access a weather API.

P.S. Some of you may my intro explaining some of my beliefs doesn’t have a place in business.  The thing is: I’m lucky enough to be able to choose who I work with and I provided the my beliefs to both attract those more like me and let people that don’t care for my beliefs to remove themselves from our list.

It isn’t meant as a disrespect to those that believe differently.  I’m only following one of my core beliefs of being curt, to the point and honest.

AutoHotkey Newsletter March 7th, 2024

Howdy,

I’ve always been a curious person.   While obtaining my undergraduate degree in Marketing I realized that I would ask 95% of the questions in class.  Thankfully I’ve never cared much what other people think of me so I wasn’t “embarrassed” to be asking a question which freed me up to learn!

Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to be asking questions.  By asking questions I was learning “how to learn”.   How to form hypothesis and use logic to prove them right or wrong.

It’s one of the main reasons why learning AutoHotkey came easy for me.  Unlike you, there were no courses on AutoHotkey, nor did I know anyone that knew it.  I had to work through things on my own.

Curiosity may have killed the cat but it made me smarter than the average bear!

For a couple of years I worked with Maestrith (author of AHK Studio) nearly every day.  Being able to watch him code, and ask him questions, was a HUGE benefit.

It’s one of the main reasons why I created the AHK Hero club.  Giving people access to world-class AutoHotkey programmers, for a reasonable price, is an incredible way to make giant leaps in learning!  Now that we have a super-low cost trial period you have NOTHING to lose!  Give it a try I guarantee you will love it!

What is Mulit-Part form data

During last week’s AHK Hero call, someone asked for some tips on working with APIs.   Isaias and I discussed a few basic things and then we both mentioned, if you see “multipart / Form data” you better be ready for a deep-dive.   APIs are fairly easy however dealing with multipart data can be confusing.  While I learned how to use a library for working with them, I wasn’t exactly clear on what I was doing so, a couple years ago, I asked Isaias to walk through the process.  You can get some great tips by watching this video

AutoHotkey Newsletter February 29th, 2024

Howdy %Name%,

About a year ago we were contacted by Allen, a blind subscriber asking to book a consultation session with us to help him use UIA.   This (somewhat) made sense to us because UIA was created to help blind people use computers (it’s the digital version of brail)

We were really excited to help Allen but were cautiously optimistic because we’ never taught a blind person before.

Man were we idiots❗

When Allen joined the call we learned Allen didn’t want us to help him use UIA.  He was writing a program to help his coworkers (THAT CAN SEE) be more productive❗We were blown away how a legally blind person was using AutoHotkey to create tools for his “technically challenged”, but sight-enabled team!

If you’re like us, you’re feeling like a slacker!   But there’s still hope for all of us!

AutoHotkey is a great way to increase both your and your coworkers productivity.   And think of how easy it will be as you can watch our courses!

Intro to Automating Excel & COM object: Team Meeting

Last week Rizwan asked for an overview of using AutoHotkey with Excel and a COM Object.  Isaias and I gave him a decent introduction and helped clarify a few misconceptions.  You can check out the video here.  We have over 30 AHK v1 videos teaching how to automate Excel here.

But don’t worry, if you’re using v2, there is very little change in how you use a COM object.   It’s the main reason our Functions, Objects, and Classes course is for both v1 and v2.

As I’m hoping you know by now, all of our courses come with a 200% money back guarantee.

🤔Easily Compare List of Items / Instant Venn Diagram analysis

When I worked in database marketing at Texas Instruments I’d frequently have a several lists and be wanting to compare what was in one list and not the other (and understand which were in both).  Sometimes it was part numbers, but often it was other things like email addresses, Document titles, Video IDs, etc.   I wrote a simple tool back then which was sweet!

I asked Rizwan to update it to v2 but had him add some cool features like: compare the items stripping-out the whitespace around the items, Allow to turn on/off case sensitivity, and show the results using our fancy Notify class.  You can see a video demonstrating the new tool here.   BTW- while the GUI only displays ~ 30 or so items, the script hand handle thousands…  So don’t think it is limited by what you see in the GUI.  You can get the counts and copy the lists to your clipboard for the full lists.

AutoHotkey News, Feb 15th, 2024 Hating Kermit

Howdy %Name%,

When I attended undergrad my mentor, TK Clarke, mentioned how he thought Kermit / Sesame Street gave a false preconception that “learning should be easy”.  While there are things that can to make it “easier” to learn, I do understand his point.   Learning is “work” as your brain is, literally, “writing new pathways” in our brains🧠.

One thing we like to do in our AHK Courses is to create “bite-size” videos (usually between 3 and 6 minutes) so people can focus on one thing and not try to learn too many things all at once.  We also put a lot of thought into the “flow” of our courses so people have  a clear path to follow (this is especially helpful since AutoHotkey is a vast & robust language).

We also reduce the stress level of our students by offering a 200% money-back guarantee.

In our AHK Hero club, we tailor our answers to the skill / knowledge level of the member that asked the question.  We even break up the calls where Friday we do more advanced topics and Saturdays are more “entry level” topics.

So, while hating on Kermit might be legit, it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing type mindset.
