AutoHotkey Newsletter Feb 8th, 2024

Howdy,

Do you notice anything strange about my front door?

A couple of years ago we added two rooms to our house.  The above door is the main entrance to the house.  The contractor drilled the top peep-hole and then told me it was done.  From the look I gave him he knew I wasn’t happy but didn’t understand why.  He quoted a spec that typical peep holes are installed at 5’ 5 inches high.   I then asked my wife to come into the room.

You see, my wife is 4’ 9” tall.  Even on her tippiest of tippy-toes she had no hope of being able to look-out of the door.  Someone suggested we just keep a box near the door so she could stand on it to peak outside.  I care much more about functionality than looks so I just had him drill another hole that would allow her to see outside.

This is similar to publicly available tools like Excel, Word, Chrome, etc. vs. having custom programs written for you.   Things made for the general public need to be a “one size fits all” whereas, when clients hire us to create custom programs, or to write scripts that change the default behavior of public tools, we come up with tools that are specific to their needs.   Yes, they pay more for the tool, however now the tools shave off time every time they use it.

If you have a tool you’re not happy with, or want to create a custom tool that will save you time, feel free to reach out to us and we can have a discovery call to see how we can save you Time and Money!

February 1st, 2024 AutoHotkey Newsletter / 🅰HK News

Howdy,

Back in November of 2022 I shared two short stories about growing up with an over-the-top alcoholic mother.  I didn’t share one of the defining moments of my life in fully grasping that your “family” is more about actions that words.

I was 19 years old and, earlier that day, had “walked my sister down the aisle” on her wedding day.  While the wedding went fine, at the reception, my mother got drunk and screamed at hundreds of guests until everyone, except our few close friends & family, had left.

I was speaking with my childhood friend Paul when my mother came up to me, got about 6 inches from my face, and kept screaming at what a horrible human being I was.  In the background I could see my two sisters huddled together crying their eyes out.  It was that very minute I made the decision to never speak to my mother again (and held to it but that’s not what this story is about.)

I was filled with such rage it is hard to describe.  Not being a violent person by nature I was ready to snap.  I’m quite certain, when I did, I would literally kill my mother.  Then, out of no-where, I see my best friend, Joe Varney, pull up in a car behind her.

Joe never said a word.  He just ran up to the three of us picking up my mother and, without missing a beat, ran back to the car throwing her in the car and driving away.

It took an all of 7 seconds but those 7 seconds changed my life forever

Joe and I never talked much about it but I always knew: he had my back and I had his.

Sometimes you need to lean on someone and sometimes that someone needs to lean on you.

While not as extreme, it is one of the reasons we highly recommend having a “coding buddy”.  Talking with other people about your coding problems helps you in many ways.

The obvious benefit is that they may directly “solve” your problem.  However frequently just explaining the problem to someone else is enough to let you realize the solution.

One thing most people don’t take into account though is how much of a psychological support it is to have other people “in the same boat” as you and realize we all have our Strengths and Weaknesses.

It’s one of the core strengths of the AHK Hero club.  Our community knows we’re all at different stages of learning and there is no talking-down or judgement.  We all help each other.

AutoHotkey News 2024-01-24

Howdy,

When I was 27 and getting my undergraduate degree on top of my courses I ran a small house painting company and was the business manager of “the Star” (the college newspaper).

At one point I was dating a woman that invited me to an interesting event; a Halloween wedding!  To make it more interesting the Charles Shultz, the inventor of the famous Peanuts/ Charlie Brown Cartoon. 😲

Anyway, she was a bridesmaid so she had to go to the rehearsal dinner and invited me along.  As you might have guessed from the beginning of this story, I was quite busy and, somehow, forgot that Charles Shultz was at all involved.

So at the rehearsal dinner I sat down between an elderly couple.  His name was “Sparky” and his wife’s was Jean.   We were making polite conversation and they asked what I did.  When I mentioned I was the business manager of the Star Sparky asked what I’d do when I got an article sent to the editor that I didn’t agree with.   I informed him that was the “Editor in Chief’s” decision but personally I’d publish it and write my best counter-argument to it.

Sparky disagreed with me and told me he’d “tear it up and burn it” never letting it see the light of day.   Sparky and I kept discussing this when Jean mentioned “Oh, the Star, yeah, the contacted me a couple of weeks back”.    I literally said “why would our college newspaper contact you?” and she replied “It was for the donation we made…”

Oh, that would be the 5-million dollar donation!

Suddenly it all came back to me that “Sparky” was Charles Shultz and that I’d been arguing with one of the best known comics on the planet!

Had I remembered who he was before we began our debate I’m pretty sure I would have been a bit more timid.  But, since I’d already made my position clear, I decided to stick with it and keep up the debate.

The main point of this is Context matters: When a noob suggests something I take it with a grain of salt.  When Isaias, our main instructor of our AutoHotkey courses, I’m much more careful to listen to his advice.  Isaias is so good we offer a 200% money back guarantee on all our courses!

So remember, you should weight the input differently depending on the source!

AutoHotkey NewsLetter January 18th, 2024

Howdy,

I’m a pretty big fan of Tom Cruise and was looking forward to the new Mission Impossible movie.

If you haven’t seen it yet, and don’t want any spoilers, skip to the next section of the newsletter…

Okay, so my wife (Cathy) and I finally found a time where we were both available to sit down with a bag of popcorn and check out the flick.

The 7th Mission Impossible movie, Dead Reckoning, was begun in February 2020.  While I don’t think they could have timed it better (given Chat GPT and the AI boom) I was incredibly disappointed with the movie.  It’s as if the they didn’t bother to consult with any actual Data Scientists about what the capabilities would be.  Having been a data scientist for nearly 20 years I always find Hollywood’s interpretation of AI cringe-worthy.

What was really surprising was the lack of effort that was put into making the AI a “real” bad guy.  Since the AI was pitched as the main antagonist I expected them to flesh-out the character (as it truly could have been done well) but, sadly, they left it feeling unreal.

Because of my background in Data Science I’ve been keeping up with a lot of the advancements in AI.   Recently I was blown away when I saw a video on the “Self Operating Computer”.  Even though I’d predicted this a few months ago, I was surprised how fast it came to be!

What really surprised me was the amount of interest in the Self Operating Computer Git RepositoryThe AI community is showing enormous interest in it (yet those very same people overlook AutoHotkey).  I know you have to apply a bit of elbow-grease to use AutoHotkey but it is, by far, the easiest language to pick up and, by far, the best at automating your PC.  It’s a shame the author of the library didn’t write it in AHK instead of Python…

📢New Course:  How to use your PC more than a Word Processor

We just finished our course teaching PC basics!  This has been something I’ve wanted to do for more than 20 years!   Back in 1998, when attending my undergraduate college, I had to take an “intro to PC” course as part of my requirement to graduate.  It was a painfully boring class for me as I was very tech savvy back then.  What shocked me was watching my classmates try and do basic things.

It was a good learning experience for me (not because I learned a lot about using a PC) but I learned that not everyone was a “geek”.  What was also really fascinating is how the above course didn’t teach you how to be efficient.  It taught concepts, not “how to” actually use a PC.

While most of what we teach here at the-Automator is simple enough for anyone to do it, there are lots of simpler things people can learn to be more efficient!  In our new course we help you discover how to use a PC more efficiently.

Remember all of our courses come with a 200% money-back guarantee!
