Task Manager in AutoHotkey: Filter, End, and Restart Processes

Windows Task Manager is great at one thing: ending a process.

But what if you want to restart it? Or jump to the folder it’s running from? Or find every copy of AutoHotkey that’s running right now?

That’s a lot of clicking around. Especially when you’re testing scripts all day.

How about you? How many times today did you open Task Manager just to kill a stuck script?

This Task Manager, written in AutoHotkey v2, does all of that from one list. 😊

Type to Filter, Right-Click to Act

Type part of a name in the filter box. The list narrows to just those processes.

Then select one, or several, and right-click:

  • End the processes
  • Restart them (it closes each one and runs it again)
  • Open the folder each one runs from
  • Copy the selected rows
  • Filter on that process name

What Each Row Shows

  • Process name and PID
  • Window handle (HWND), handy for your scripts
  • How much RAM it uses
  • The full path to the program

Live CPU load and RAM totals sit at the top. Set a refresh period in seconds and the list keeps itself up to date.

Tick Show System when you need to see Windows’ own processes too.

Prefer it dark? Switch the dark theme on or off in Preferences, in the tray menu.

Credit where it’s due: this started as fenchai’s AutoHotkey v1 task manager. We converted it to v2 and added a few things.

What’s in the Download

  • AutohotkeyTaskManager.exe, ready to run (no AutoHotkey needed)
  • TaskManagerV2.ahk, the full AutoHotkey v2 source
  • The lib folder it uses
Requirements: Windows. The exe runs on its own.

To run the source instead, you need AutoHotkey v2. Keep the lib folder next to the script.

Get the Task Manager

The AutoHotkey Task Manager is $4.99. You get the exe and the source.

One thing I’ve learned: the tools you use fifty times a day are the ones most worth upgrading.

Restart that stuck script in two clicks, and get back to work. ⚡
