AHK File Explorer: A Windows File Manager That Actually Keeps Up With You
You copy a file into a folder, flip back to Windows Explorer, and… nothing. The file is there on disk, but the window is showing you the past. So you hit F5. Again. And again.
AHK File Explorer fixes that. It watches the folder you are looking at and updates the moment something changes — and it keeps your selection and scroll position exactly where you left them. No flicker, no jumping to the top, no F5.

Live Auto-Refresh Is the Headline Feature
This is not a polling timer that re-reads the disk every few seconds and burns CPU doing it. AHK File Explorer uses the Windows ReadDirectoryChangesW API, so the operating system tells it the instant a file is added, renamed, deleted, or modified in the folder you are viewing.
A few details that make it pleasant instead of annoying:
- Your place is preserved. Selection and scroll position survive the refresh.
- Bursts are smoothed. Unzip 40 files at once and you get one clean update, not 40 redraws.
- Active writers do not storm the screen. A file still downloading is throttled, so a growing file will not make the list flash.
- It tells you the truth. A status-bar indicator reads ● Live when the folder is being watched, and honestly says when it is not.
That last point matters. Network shares are not watched, because change notifications over SMB are unreliable and a tool that silently pretends otherwise is worse than one that says so. Very large folders are skipped too, so the app never freezes re-reading 10,000 files. In both cases the indicator shows exactly why, and F5 still works.
The Rest of the Tool
| Feature | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Folder sizes | A background C++ engine calculates real folder sizes and fills them in as it goes. Toggle it off when you do not need it. |
| Metadata columns | Length, Dimensions, Item type, Bit rate, and the usual dates — pulled in the background so browsing never stalls. Pick the columns you want. |
| Real file operations | Copy, Cut, Paste, Rename, and Delete that interoperate with Windows Explorer’s own clipboard. Copy into a folder that already has that name and it auto-increments instead of failing. |
| Familiar keyboard | Ctrl+C / X / V / A, F2 rename, Del and Shift+Del, F5, Backspace for up, Alt+Left and Alt+Right for back and forward. |
| Customizable hotkeys | Copy-path and focus-address-bar are yours to rebind through a built-in preferences dialog. They only fire while the explorer window is active. |
| Address bar | Type or paste any path and press Enter. Point it at a file and it opens that file’s folder. |
| Dark theme | A properly dark UI — including the list header and tree selection, the parts most dark modes miss. No white flash on startup. |
| Handy toolbar | New Folder, Show Hidden Files, Copy Path, Open Terminal Here, and Zip — one click each. |
Who It Is For
If you spend your day watching a folder — a downloads directory, a render output, a scan-to-folder destination, a build directory, a log folder — this is built for you. Anyone who has ever sat there mashing F5 waiting for a file to show up will feel the difference in about ten seconds.
Source Included — Not Just a Black Box
Your download includes the compiled .exe and the complete, commented AutoHotkey v2 source. Not a stripped-down demo — the actual code the app is built from. That means you can:
- Hand it to someone who does not code. The .exe just runs — no AutoHotkey install required.
- Bend it to your workflow. Add a column, wire up a toolbar button, change a hotkey, drop in your own context-menu action.
- Lift the parts you need. The folder watcher, the dark-theme engine, and the clipboard code are each useful on their own in your other scripts.
As a worked example it is a substantial one: TreeView and ListView wiring, dark theming via custom draw (including the list header and tree selection that most dark modes get wrong), asynchronous background engines, Explorer-compatible clipboard interop, and a real Windows change-notification watcher — all in idiomatic AHK v2, with the tricky parts commented as to why, not just what.
