AHK News 2025-10-30: Yes I met Ron Swanson❗

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy %Name%,

A new client scheduled a call with me a couple weeks ago.

I’ll have to admit I was a bit skeptical when I saw his name: Ron Swanson

If you were a fan of Parks and Recreation, then you understand why I thought it might be a fake name.

If you’re not familiar with Ron Swanson, here’s one of my favorite Swanson clips.

I’ll admit: part of me hoped it was Nick Offerman in character. A friend who worked on the Parks and Rec set told me Nick is nothing like his famous character politically.

My call with Ron went great!   He started working with code in 1965 doing data processing.

That’s right; he’s been coding for 60+ years!

It was great having a client that we could very quickly work through the various approaches and settle on one that was far better than he’d anticipated.

I also convinced him to join the AHK Hero club both for the discount but also because I knew he’d enjoy getting to know the other Hero members that have equally long technology careers.

Customizing VS Code

During a Hero call Ray asked about configuring VS Code.

Isaias took 30 minutes to help him adjust his extensions, change some color preferences in his theme, etc.  You can check it out in this video.

Keep in mind we sell Isaias’ personal VS code settings here.

Comparing Edit Fields to DropDown

During an AHK hero call we talked about the pros and cons of Edit fields versus a Dropdown.  You can see the conversation here and see how easy it is to switch between them.  Or, get the best of both worlds and use a ComboBox.

We’ve all been there!   We create a script, get it working “perfectly” and then share it with a friend / colleague and it crashes faster than a free trial runs out!

We put our collective brains together and fed AI what the most important things to look for when sharing scripts and created this video.   We also made this checklist

What we utomated this week with AutoHotkey #108

This week I showed editor improvements, built out a mono-to-stereo audio conversion tool that doesn’t require re-rendering your video (huge time saver), and figured out how to switch between Windows 11’s classic and modern context menus.

In this video I walk you through all the tools we’ve been working on, why some of them are going to be paid products, and what’s next for the Ahk Script Maker.

P.S. At the start of my meeting with Ron he mentioned that he’s programmed in a lot of languages and was fully capable of learning AutoHotkey but decided it made more sense to pay us to do the work for him.

It was  very smart choice because we started off trying to automate the Browser but realized we could take a far more advanced, and reliable, approach by performing the API calls directly.

If you have an idea for an automation and have more money than time, then consider scheduling a call with me to see what I can do for you!

AHK News 2025-10-23 Oh that!

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy %Name%,

Years ago I worked at a company where a group of us would meet in the cafeteria for coffee before the day started.

One of the guys was always a “negative ninny” and complained about everything!

He was so bad that I decided to put my belief to the test.

When he and his wife returned from Paris, I asked him what he thought of the Mona Lisa.

“oh that”

was his initial reply (and he went on about “what a waste of time” it was❗)

What I didn’t realize at the time is how much people’s attitudes both affect you and wear off on you.

So be careful who you spend time with.

Our AHK Hero Club is packed with positive people that have a “can do” attitude!

Pasting Files with a Hotkey

During our AHK Hero call last week we discussed updates to our Clipster function.

In this extract we demonstrated how, besides being able to paste HTML links and pictures, you can now paste files with a HotString or Hotkey.

Free Tool for Seeing Hard Drive Usage

A client mentioned she was running out of hard drive space.   In this video I mentioned she could use WinDirStat for seeing a visual of what is eating up file space on her computer.   Several AHK Hero members mentioned they prefer WizTree.

Using Clipboard instead of a Variable

During a recent consultation, a client was asking for feedback on his script.

One thing I noticed was that he was, using the Clibpoard and continuously updating/changing the value (using StrSplit, SubStr, Regex, etc.) on it.

It made for a great topic during the Hero call.

Improving People’s Lives: Story #68

A new client joined the AHK Hero Club and asked for help automating updating parts on a website.

We wrote him a very robust tool using Rufaydium to get the cookies and then do the activities with API calls (instead of automating the browser)

If a human was to do update for a part it would take ~25 seconds (assuming they stayed focused)

The client had around 20,000 parts to update!   This works out to ~139 hours (more than 3 weeks of work)

Our script took around ~2 seconds to update a part (and ran by itself) finishing the task in less than 1 day.  And our script created log files tracking all actions taken❗

Horizontal bar chart comparing cost: AHK automation at 3 versus manual work at ,089 for the same parts update task

Ballparking it, they would have paid around $7,100 to have a human do it❗

AHK News: Now that’s a name to remember❗

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy %Name%,

You might be aware that we’re working on a new AutoHotkey editor that will be simple enough for beginners to use it yet powerful enough where people like Isaias will still work with it.

You may not be aware of it but I have a masters in Market Research (and my Undergraduate degree is in Marketing).   I’ve also been studying copywriting for many years and can tell you that the name of your project can make or break its success.

During a Hero call a few weeks back, I ran a quiz a few weeks back and there were a few front runners.    One that I liked was “Ahk Script Maker“.

It’s clear, to the point and helps beginners understand the usage (many don’t know what an “editor” is)

But it wasn’t “jumping out” for me.

I wanted something that would not only get attention but would get people “excited”.

I put on my thinking cap and came up with:

Optimized Rapid Generation – Ahk Script Maker

I do think it will appeal to both Noobs and Advanced users.

Yes, it is a mouthful.

But I think the name will catch on.   Perhaps we’ll just come up with an acronym…

Yes, I think an Acronym would definitely help with the marketing angle.

To prove my point here are a few introductory statements we might try:

  • Would you be interested in getting ORGASM?
  • We guarantee, once you try ORGASM, you’ll be hooked❗
  • Experience productivity like never before. Get your ORGASM today
  • Your productivity climax starts here; try ORGASM now!
  • Skip the foreplay and go straight to results with ORGASM.

Don’t worry.   I haven’t (entirely) lost my mind.

I’ll keep it “safe” and go with Ahk Script Maker

But you have to admit, it would get attention❗

Packing Up Your Script

If you’re like me and using AI a lot, then you know how annoying it can be to provide your entire script to AI when there are a bunch of #Includes.

When I used to code with AHK Studio, I used a “pack up” function to push all of the code to the clipboard.  It was a game changer, so we created this script to do this for us.

You can check it out in this video.

Improving People’s Lives: Story #67

We had a client call this week with someone that had to “disable ~30,000 SKUs” manually!

Irfan was able to use Rufaydium to get the cookies and then make the changes using API calls.

What would have taken hundreds of hours, now takes 1 minute to start and then runs automatically

P.S. Hopefully I didn’t offend you on the intro.  Our editor is coming along nicely.

Currently our plan is to have a “intro” version (without tools) and an advanced version which comes with a lot of “must have” tools (some of which will be AI driven.)

This advanced version will require a subscription.
