| Strip the background junk out of Windows before a long haul, turn a spare numpad into extra keybinds, and flip between headset and speakers without digging through Sound settings. |

You know the drill. SimBrief OFP loaded, cold and dark at the gate, GSX pushback called… and Windows picks that moment to start indexing, updating and syncing OneDrive in the background. Then you’re on the ILS in busy airspace, VATSIM ATC is talking, Discord is pinging, and you’re hunting through Windows Sound settings to figure out why it’s all coming out of the desktop speakers instead of your headset. Sound familiar? ❓ Let me be straight with you up front: nothing on this page talks to MSFS, X-Plane or P3D. No SimConnect, no FSUIPC, no magic FPS button. These are small Windows tools for the PC, the audio and the keyboard your sim runs on. That’s it. And I’m not going to promise you frames. Your sim settings and add-ons matter a lot more than anything here. What these tools do is clear out Windows clutter, tame your audio and give you more buttons, and every change can be undone. So below are the tools I’d hand a simmer, most helpful first. They all run on your Windows PC. Click Learn more on any one for the full rundown. Now on with the show… 😃 |
| Preflight: A Leaner Windows Before Pushback 🛫 |
Your sim wants every bit of memory and CPU it can get. Windows ships with a lot of stuff running that you never asked for. |
| Tool | What it does for you | Remove Windows Bloat Learn more → | Scans your PC and gives you a checklist of Windows 11 clutter: the Copilot button, Widgets, Start menu ads, the “finish setting up your PC” nag and more. Tick what you want gone and it tells you exactly what it changed. Nothing left running in the background afterward. | RegainRAM Learn more → | One window shows the Windows services and hidden settings that hold memory in the background (SysMain, telemetry, the search indexer, OneDrive sync and more). Switch off what you don’t need, or hit Disable All. One click puts them all back. | AddToStartUp Learn more → | See everything that launches when Windows starts, in one list, and switch off what you don’t need. Disabling doesn’t delete anything, so you can turn an item back on anytime. No admin rights needed. | Power Plan Swapper Learn more → | Flip to high performance with a hotkey before a long haul, and back to power saving when you shut down for the night. | Windows Performance Optimizer Learn more → | Switch off Windows animations and window effects in one click. Your original settings get backed up so you can put them back anytime. |
|
| Tip: Make your changes one tool at a time and fly your usual route in between. That way, if something acts up, you know exactly which change to undo. Good test pilots change one variable at a time. 😊 |

| Headset Audio and Extra Keybinds 🎧 |
More buttons and saner audio: the two things every simmer wants more of. |
| Tool | What it does for you | Volume Level Adjuster Learn more → | A per-app volume mixer that shows every program making sound right now, plus a one-click default-device switch. Keep your VATSIM client loud, the sim a notch lower and Discord in the background, and flip from speakers to headset with a hotkey. | Second Keyboard Hotkeys Learn more → | Plug in a cheap USB numpad or an old keyboard and give it its own hotkeys, separate from your main keyboard. Map its keys to the sim keybinds you already use (autopilot, lights, views, ATC window) and you’ve got a budget button box. |
|
| Tip: Print a little keycap map for your spare numpad and tape it next to your throttle quadrant. Future you, in the middle of a go-around, will thank you. ⚡ |
|
| Pop-Outs, Charts and Your OFP 🗺️ |
| Tool | What it does for you | Toggle Between Monitors Learn more → | Throw the active window to your other monitor with a hotkey. Pop-out PFD, MFD or EFB windows landed on the wrong screen again? One keypress sends them over. | Always on Top Learn more → | Pin your SimBrief OFP, a chart or a checklist so it stays on top of the sim. (Works when the sim runs windowed or borderless, not exclusive full screen.) |
|
One thing I’ve learned: the fun part of any hobby shrinks when you spend half of it fighting the computer. Pick ONE thing on this list that bugs you every flight. Fix that. Then pick the next one. Less time in Windows settings means more time in the left seat. That’s the real FREEDOM. ✈️ How about you? What’s the one thing about your sim setup that drives you nuts every single flight? Drop me a note and tell me. I read every one. |
