Save Your Window Layout, Restore It in One Click

Save Your Window Layout, Restore It in One Click

You finally get every window where you want it: email on the left screen, browser in the middle, chat tucked in the corner. Then you undock the laptop, or plug it back in, and Windows throws everything into a pile on one monitor. MonitorLayout fixes that. Save your window setup as a named layout (docked, laptop, meeting) and bring it back whenever you need it.

Your desk, back the way you left it: Save your window setup as a named layout (docked, laptop, meeting) and bring it back whenever you need it.

Works Even When Your Monitors Change

Positions are saved relative to each monitor, so a layout still lands correctly when a screen moves, changes scale or goes missing. If a monitor from the saved layout is not connected, its windows go to your main monitor instead of getting lost.

What It Does

Save as many named layouts as you like

Click Save current layout as…, type a name such as docked, laptop or meeting, and every open window is recorded: which monitor it is on, its position, its size, and whether it is normal, maximized or minimized. Reusing a name asks before it replaces the old layout.

Restore with one click (or a double-click)

Pick a layout and click Restore selected, or just double-click it. Windows go back to their saved monitor, size and state. Windows that are already in place are left alone, and the Last restore column shows what happened to each one.

Run it from a shortcut or hotkey

Point a desktop shortcut or your own hotkey at MonitorLayout.ahk /save docked or /restore docked. It does the job, shows a short notification and closes, without opening a window.

See what will be saved before you save it

The main window lists your saved layouts next to the windows a save would capture right now, with the program, title, monitor number and state of each. Hover over any button or list for a short tip explaining it (you can turn tips off from the tray menu).

Safe by design

MonitorLayout only moves your application windows. It never changes screen resolution or display arrangement, never touches the taskbar or desktop, and never needs administrator rights. Layouts are plain JSON files stored on your own computer; nothing is uploaded.
