“You’re on mute.” Four words every Zoom user has heard.
The problem is that Zoom’s mic icon lives inside the Zoom window. The moment you switch to your slides, your browser or your email, you can’t see it anymore.
Zoom Glance Bar puts four big, color-coded bars at the top of your screen during every Zoom meeting. One look tells you if your Zoom mic is live, your camera is on, you’re sharing your screen, and (if you host) whether the meeting is recording. And you can click the bars to change them.
Muted or Live? Look at the Top of Your Screen
The bars sit on top of every window, on the monitor you choose. They show up on their own when you join a Zoom meeting and disappear when you leave.
Red means muted or off. Green means live or on. You don’t have to go hunting for the Zoom window to find out.
Four Color-Coded Bars
| Bar | Green | Red | Yellow |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIC | Mic live, people hear you | Muted | Audio not joined yet |
| CAM | Camera on | Camera off | |
| SHARE | You are sharing | Not sharing | |
| REC (host) | Cloud recording on | Not recording | Recording paused |
MIC: Is Your Zoom Mic Live?
A bright red MIC MUTED bar is hard to miss when you start talking to a silent room. Yellow JOIN AUDIO means you’re in the meeting but never connected your audio, which is the reason behind a lot of “can you hear me?” moments.
CAM: Is Your Camera On?
Green CAM ON or red CAM OFF. No more wondering if people can see you eating lunch.
SHARE: Are You Actually Sharing?
Green SHARED means your screen is going out. It only tracks your own share, so someone else presenting won’t turn it green.
REC: Is the Meeting Recording?
Hosts (and co-hosts with recording rights) get a fourth bar for cloud recording. It’s there so you don’t forget to start the recording, or end the call with it still running. Attendees never see it.
Click a Bar to Mute, Unmute or Stop Sharing
Here’s the part people don’t expect: the bars are buttons. That makes them a Zoom mute button that’s always on top.
- Click MIC to mute or unmute. It works even when Zoom isn’t your active window.
- Click CAM to start or stop your video
- Click SHARE to stop sharing
- Click REC (hosts) to start or stop cloud recording
- Right-click any bar to hide all of them for 5 seconds when they’re in the way
The camera, share and record clicks use Zoom’s own keyboard shortcuts (Alt+V, Alt+S and Alt+C). If you changed those in Zoom, set the same keys in Zoom Glance Bar’s Preferences. Want the rest of Zoom’s shortcuts? Here’s our free Zoom keyboard shortcuts table.
Presenting on Two Monitors? Move Zoom’s Share Toolbar
When you share a screen, Zoom drops its floating toolbar right on top of what your audience is trying to see.
Turn on one option and Zoom Glance Bar moves that toolbar to your other monitor the moment you start sharing. Your slides stay clean.
Size, Opacity and Monitor: Make the Bars Fit
- Pick the monitor the bars live on
- Font size 5 to 12 pt sets the bar size, so you can go small on a laptop
- Opacity 20% to 100% if you want them see-through
- Preview for 5 seconds before you save
- Start with Windows from the tray menu, so it’s running before your first call
- Pause from the tray menu when you don’t want the bars
Settings are saved per Windows user, so everyone on a shared PC keeps their own.

What You Need
- Windows 10 or 11
- The Zoom desktop app (the Zoom app for Windows, not Zoom in a browser)
- Nothing else. The download includes a ready-to-run .exe, the AutoHotkey v2 source, and a user guide (HTML and PDF).
Questions Zoom Users Ask
How do I unmute on Zoom without switching windows?
Zoom’s own shortcut, Alt+A, only works while the Zoom window is active, unless you dig into Zoom’s settings and make it global. With Zoom Glance Bar you click the MIC bar at the top of your screen, from whatever program you’re in.
Is this a Zoom plugin?
No. It’s a small Windows program that runs next to Zoom and reads Zoom’s on-screen state. Nothing gets installed into Zoom, and there’s no Zoom account setting to change.
Does the REC bar show local recordings?
No. It tracks Zoom cloud recording only, and only when you are the host or a co-host with recording rights.
Does it work on a Mac?
No. Zoom Glance Bar is for Windows 10 and 11.
Want hotkeys for your mic in every app, not just Zoom?
Take a look at Device Mute: separate hotkeys you pick to mute your mic, your speakers, or both, from any window.
