Do you Hate AI❓ News-2026-07-02

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy,

I recently read an article from Tom’s hardware.  The author, Amanda Caswell, was discussing the dichotomy of people’s love/hate for AI.

I have noticed that there are a lot of people that dislike AI.

Is it just another “tool” that man will use to be more productive or will it be our downfall❓

I very well may concede it may end humanity as we know it

Having said that, I also think the genie is out of the bottle and there’s no putting it back.

And, sticking your head in the sand🦚, is not likely to be helpful regardless of how you feel.

Where do you stand %name%❓

Quickly Adding Business Cards

I’ve been attending Chamber of commerce events lately and often return home with a few business cards (which I was dutifully entering into a spreadsheet).  I was typing in some recent ones when I realized “Why don’t I make an app for this”.

Less than 1 hour later I had an app that scanned a Business card, OCRs it with Opus, search for them on LinkedIn via API call from PeopleDataLabs , and added them as a contact to my phone and to an online Cloudflare database (which I can easily push to an email drip campaign).

Quick QR Code Generator 💪🏻

When I was adding QR codes and Barcodes to Noticeable Text, I realized another cool tool would be to create a QR Code generator that will build custom QR codes for a TON of different things.

Currently I have 14 different actions but, since you can add a “URL” the URL can be for endless options…

For those that need inspiration I made a “Need ideas” button which has 1,000 random ideas just to help you get ideas.

Replacing the Horrible Windows Taskbar

What we 🅰utomated this week with AutoHotkey #138

This week was another big week.

I revamped my whole startup management setup, kept training a local AutoHotkey LLM, and built Phone Bridge to mirror and control my Android phone from the desktop, plus a media shrinker, a QR action driver, a mouse spotlight, and a pile of other AHK tools.

I also ran 150 tests across a bunch of AI models to see which ones write the cleanest V2 code (Grok came out surprisingly cheap and good).

In this week’s video I walk you through all of it and why I think the real win with AI is using it to generate code, then letting deterministic programs do the work.

AHK News 2026-06-25 – In search of the best AI model for writing AHK v2 code

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy,

With the prices of AI Tokens going up and the “blacklisting” of Mythos/Fable5 I got to thinking maybe I should fine-tune a local LLM model on AutoHotkey.

I started thinking about what I would use to train it.

I have over 2,000 AutoHotkey v2 scripts, transcripts to 6 AHK v2 courses, Over 80 AHK Skills/Agents, the AHK v2 documentation, and ~ a dozen well-written AHK Git repositories.

I worked with Claude code to decide how to train my model with my Nvidia 3060.  It took quite a bit of time but I came up with a model that should run on most computers.

I made it accessible to AHK Script Maker and saw it was generating valid AHK v2 code.

But then I wondered “How does my locally trained model stack up against Flagship models like Opus, Chat GPT, Grok, etc.

So I had Claude develop 150 syntax tests and had it loop over 12 models (you can learn more about the process and results here)

The results were fascinating❗

While I regularly use Claude’s Sonnet and Opus models, they’re not cheap.
I know Isaias heavily leans on Chat GPT’s 5.4 model (again not cheap.)

I was (somewhat) surprised to see Grok 4.3 emerge as a clear winner for both Quality of code and Price.

Granted, the price is artificially low because X-AI is heavily subsidizing it but both Anthropic and OpenAI are also subsidizing their models.

After training (which didn’t cost much) my local fine-tuned model was free and private.  It also delivered the cleanest AHK v2 code (96% of code was v2 code and 4% was v1) of all the models❗

Quality vs Price

Code Quality vs Cost

I always included Grok in my “guru” list (when I ask other AIs to brainstorm on my plan or for troubleshooting) but I’m going to start using Grok more for my day-to-day coding.

How about you❓  What is your favorite model for developing AHK v2 code?

Don’t get embarrassed when Sharing your screen

We recently learned how easy it is to “hide” a GUI from screen capture tools like Zoom, OBS, etc.

Since I am often sharing my screen in Zoom, I thought it would be cool to be able to hide my notifications that appear on the screen.

So with a few minor tweaks we updated our Notify Class so you can easily hide them from screen capture tools.   Check it out in this video.

P.S. When I was training my LLM on AutoHotkey I was asking AI if I had a GPU with more VRam (and could have a larger model) if I could get closer to Frontier model performance like Grok & Opus.

It said “not really” because those models have been hardened with an amazing amount of “logic and thinking” for solving problems.

So the small model I made, for now, is the right sized-model for data you want to keep private.

I Tested 12 AI Models on AutoHotkey v2. The Winner Shocked Me.

Which AI Writes the Best AutoHotkey v2? I Tested 12 of Them

I use AI to write AutoHotkey every single day. So one question kept nagging at me: which model is actually the BEST at it?

Turns out that’s a trickier question than it sounds, because “best” isn’t one thing.

Most people jump straight to “does the code work?” And yeah, that matters a TON. AutoHotkey is a niche language, it’s not splattered all over the internet like Python or JavaScript, and a lot of models love to sneak in old v1 syntax that blows up in v2. So step one is simple: does the script actually run?

But that’s not the whole story. Think about how YOU actually pick a tool. There’s more than one thing you care about:

  • Does it work? Valid, clean v2 syntax that runs the first time. The big one.
  • How much does it cost? Some of these models are 10x or even 90x pricier than others. If a cheap one is “90% as good,” that’s a HUGE deal when you’re running hundreds of requests.
  • How fast is it? A brilliant answer that takes 30 seconds can be worse than a good answer in two. Speed is productivity.
  • What about your privacy? Every prompt you send to a cloud model leaves your machine. For a lot of my work, that’s fine. For client code or anything sensitive, running a model locally (where nothing ever leaves your computer) is worth a lot.
  • Can you even run it yourself? An open model you control beats a black box you rent, at least for some jobs.

So I decided to stop guessing and actually measure it. I ran 12 models (11 of the big cloud players plus a little 3B model I trained on AutoHotkey scripts, Our AHK Courses, Our AHK Claude Skills and Agents, the AHK V2 Documentation, AHK V2 Code extension, and v2 git repositories) through the exact same set of tasks, scored the same way, and tracked what each one cost.

The results surprised me. The most EXPENSIVE model didn’t win. And my tiny home-grown model, running free on a single desktop GPU, held its own against models that cost real money. 🤖

The short version: Grok 4.3 won with 98% valid syntax, and it did it for $0.52, beating models that cost up to 17x more. My home-trained 3B model landed mid-pack and wrote some of the cleanest v2 code of anything I tested.

Which AI writes the best AutoHotkey v2 code?

Grok 4.3. I gave 12 AI models the same AutoHotkey v2 coding tasks, and Grok wrote valid v2 syntax 98.5% of the time. The whole run cost me 52 cents! Claude Opus 4.8 came in a close second at 96.9%, but it cost 17 times more. Here’s how all 12 stacked up:

#ModelMakerValid syntaxv2-cleanCost

How did I test the AI models on AutoHotkey?

Every model got the same 150 AutoHotkey tasks (write, explain and refactor), and every code answer went through the real AutoHotkey v2 parser. And here’s the important part: those tasks came from a hold-out set my fine-tuned model never saw while training. So nobody gets an “I memorized this” advantage. The tasks come in three flavors, the same way I actually use AI for AutoHotkey:

Task#What the model has to do
Write54Build a complete AHK v2 script from a plain-English description.
Explain66Read a script and explain, step by step, what it does. (Tests understanding, not code.)
Refactor30Take a script and clean it up: fix v1 patterns, modernize to good v2.

The 84 tasks that expect code (Write plus Refactor) are the ones I ran through the syntax checker. The 66 Explain tasks are prose, so they don’t get syntax-scored. English isn’t AutoHotkey. 😊

Every answer went through the same pipeline:

  1. Pull out the code from the reply, so a model gets judged on its code, not on how chatty it is.
  2. Check the syntax by running the script through the real AutoHotkey v2 parser. It either parses or it doesn’t.
  3. Scan for v1 leaks, the old patterns (like MsgBox, or %var%) that shouldn’t show up in v2.
  4. Separate real fails from blips, if a model returned nothing because of a network hiccup, that doesn’t count against its score.

Do expensive AI models write better AutoHotkey?

Nope. The two priciest models, Claude Opus 4.8 ($8.90) and Gemini 3.1 Pro ($7.27), both scored LOWER on valid syntax than Grok 4.3 at 52 cents. In my test, price did not predict quality at all. Don’t assume expensive means better. Measure it. 😊

  • Grok 4.3 is the value king. Best syntax score AND the cheapest of the big models. It beat Opus while costing 1/17th the price. That’s wild.
  • Price does NOT predict quality. The two priciest models (Opus at $8.90, Gemini Pro at $7.27) both got out-scored on syntax by a 52-cent model. Don’t assume expensive means better.
  • My little home model punched way above its weight. At just 3 billion parameters it beat DeepSeek v3.2 and Codestral on syntax, and wrote the cleanest v2 code of anything I tested (the single highest v2-clean score in the whole field). Running free, on my own desktop, with nothing leaving my machine.  This model is small enough that should run on most Windows computers❗
  • Bigger isn’t always smarter. A focused little model that knows ONE thing beat much larger general-purpose models at that one thing. For a niche language, that’s a big lesson.

Can a small local AI model write AutoHotkey v2?

Yes, and pretty well. My little 3-billion-parameter model, fine-tuned at home on my own AutoHotkey v2 scripts, wrote valid v2 72.4% of the time. It also wrote the cleanest v2 code of all 12 models. And it runs free and offline on a regular desktop GPU, so nothing ever leaves my computer.

That ahk-coder-3b-v4 entry isn’t a cloud model. It’s a small open model I fine-tuned at home to do one job: write good AutoHotkey v2. Here’s the recipe:

  • The starting point: Qwen2.5-Coder-3B, a small open coding model.
  • The training data: 1,729 of my own hand-written AutoHotkey v2 scripts. I had a frontier model turn each one into training examples (write, explain, refactor), the same three flavors as the test.
  • The cleanup: I filtered hard, tossing anything truncated, broken, v1-leaking, or duplicated, down to 947 verified-clean examples. Fixing one nasty data bug in this step is what jumped the score 22 points. The lesson: garbage in, garbage out is REAL.
  • The hardware: QLoRA fine-tuning on a single NVIDIA RTX 3060 (12GB), a regular desktop card. Then I run it locally through Ollama, so inference is free and offline.
  • The iterations: it took four versions (v1 to v4). Versions 1 through 3 I chased the problem by tweaking training knobs, and the score barely budged (~44%). The real win came in v4 when I stopped fiddling with settings and fixed the DATA instead. (I also tried a 7B version, it wouldn’t fit on the 3060 for training. And a focused 3B beat the stock 7B anyway.)
One honest note: the hard numbers above measure two things well, valid syntax and v1-cleanliness. Speed and privacy I talked through but didn’t formally score here. That local model’s privacy edge (nothing ever leaves your computer) is a real win the syntax number alone doesn’t show.

So what’s the takeaway? There’s no single “best.” If you want the strongest AutoHotkey coder right now and you’re paying per call, Grok 4.3 is a no-brainer on both quality and price.

But if privacy or cost-at-scale matters, a small model trained on YOUR code can get you most of the way there for free.

The bigger lesson, though? Stop guessing and start measuring. I almost just assumed the expensive model was best. Testing it took an afternoon and completely changed which model I reach for.

How about you? Which model have you been leaning on for your AutoHotkey work? 🚀
