The Problem With Thinking Bigger Than Everyone Around You | AHK News 2026-05-28

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy,

During a very fun call with a couple of Hero members I realized, in addition to my previous observations that we like to Get Things Done, we have a few other traits:

  • One is that we are “risk takers” and, like me, would rather ask for forgiveness than permission.
  • Another commonality is we’re used to others not grasping our ideas. (It’s one of the reasons we have such fun on the Hero calls.  Like minded people not only “get” your idea but will often offer some interesting tweaks to it.
  • While we don’t care much about who takes credit for our idea, we are adamant about giving credit to other’s ideas
  • We are amazing at “thinking outside the box”. I’ve been a quantitative Stats guy for 30 years but I’m also incredibly creative!

So, if the above sounds like you, you really should consider joining our Hero club.  We have a blast during our calls and always walk away with new ideas.

Creating a CLI for Excel

During a Hero call we showed how we created an Excel CLI tool.

Excel itself is not opensource (and the COM object is enormous) so we decided to just have Claude look at our XL function Library because we put the most common things we used Excel for in it.

Then we just asked Claude to use the XL.exe tool from the command line and Whammo❗

Check it out in this video.

Getting a Path to Files in Notepad

Connie, a Hero member, asked if we could figure out how to programmatically get the file path from Notepad and then add that approach to Get Active Path.

While this seemed niche at first, I realized maybe there was a way that would carry over to other Windows Apps so it was worth investigating so…

Challenge Accepted!

We were able to find a way to do it (but it is just bound to the new Windows 11 Notepad

And they said “Breaking up” is hard to do…

I’m sure, like me, you’ve sat through long meetings, seminars, etc. where you sit for hours listening to non-helpful things
for 90% of the time however there are some
interesting “nuggets” that are worth capturing and sharing.

Unfortunately who has the time to dig through the recordings to break them out❓

Well our Media Segmenter makes that task incredibly easy❗

Check it out in this video.

Improving People’s Lives: Story #97

I’ve been attending Chamber of Commerce meetings in a nearby town.

Many people are very interested in AI but are “afraid” to get started.

Generally I just listen to what they want to use AI for, then point them in the right direction with a few videos that discuss it (or I use NotebookLM to create a custom video for them.)

It’s really great to be able to help people getting started with AI❗

Howdy %Name%,

Mary Meeker, a very well-known researcher, released this mind-blowing 340 page deck on AI Trends over the weekend and it is INSANE❗

As I mentioned there are 340 slides in her deck.  I’d say 2/3rds of them are mind blowing!

Below are my super-high level takeaways:

  • Growth of user base (adaptation of AI) is unprecedented
  • Both Electrical and Cost per Token has plummeted
  • AI is the #1 priority for the world’s corporate giants
  • AGI (where AI can learn / do anything people can do) will be achieved soon❗

I used NotebookLM to create a summary podcast which is very good and you can listen to here.

I can’t emphasize enough of just how much the world is going to be changing around us in the very, very near future.

So, if you’ve been casually sitting-back on AI, I highly encourage you to look closer / embrace it.

Our world is truly about to go through a transformation like we have never seen before!

While we’ve added a couple to this list, the video is still a great overview of how you can use AutoHotkey to automate your programs.

A client asked us to create a custom tool to replace his “snippet tool”.   I realized, we could directly import it into Prompt Assistant.

But then he asked a very interesting question

Can Prompt Assistant send RTF text❓

I explained our Clipster library allows for pushing HTML or Pictures which he confirmed will work for him.

are out there that I haven’t heard of or in general seeing how others use AutoHotkey and learning through that

AHK News 2025-05-22: The Best AI for writing AHK v2 Code

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy %name%,

AI has come a long way since Jackie and I reviewed it 5 years ago!

It’s gone from being a novelty to something I use multiple times a day!

There are now too many AI tools out there to keep track of but the question specific for us (and you) is:

Which AI tool provides the best AutoHotkey v2 code “out of the box”❓

While not scientific I put them in the following rank order:

Up until a month ago I would have had Claude at the top however, recently, Grok has been able to deliver more often than Claude and it’s creating very advanced scripts with little nudging needed!

I should also mention that I’m a paying member of both Claude and ChatGPT.

I have created the following two custom projects in Claude which I find very helpful

The first one helps AI convert older scripts to v2.

The second one greatly reduces the amount of code that I both put it, and get out, of Claude.

I instruct Claude to use my libraries to help with my code and (most importantly) when it uses them, to refer to them with #Includes (as I’ve given it the local path to libs on my computer)

How about you❓

What’s your favorite AI tool for writing AHK V2 code❓

Improving People’s Lives: Story #50

Our client had ~65 medical terms that were lacking what they were associated with.

So I created a project in claude all of which used the same prompt and asked for a bulleted list of output.

In about 10 minutes I had it all done with great reports that will take very little editing.
