AutoHotkey News 2024-12-05 How Sherlock debugged our code!

AutoHotkey NewsletterHowdy

Irfan, Scott (an AHK hero member) and I were hanging out in zoom and working on a client’s project of using AI to perform OCR on W2s.
We were getting incomplete results and Claude was telling him he was over the “out of tokens” yet Irfan showed he set them at 5,000 and had only used 2,100.

In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories Sherlock would frequently say

when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth

This logical principle has become known as “Holmes’s Razor” and is frequently referenced in discussions of deductive reasoning and problem-solving.

With that in my brain I doubled-down on asking Irfan to verify he really was setting the threshold at 5,000.

Sure enough, buried in the class, was some incorrect logic that wasn’t changing our threshold.  We updated our Claude class and moved forward on the project!

Excellent programmers are often a good balance of creative & logical people.  The creativity helps you solve problems.   The Logic helps you solve the problems the creativity creates!

We discuss both a lot in our AHK hero group during the three hours of live zoom calls each week and in our  private Telegram group.

Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Isaias and I dove into Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol the other day.   We were able to connect Claude to our desktops and to SQLite databases.

It’s early days, and we worked through a bug they have in this video, but it shows great promise!

Building Better Prompts with Claude

Speaking of Claude, many people don’t know that, if you’re a paying subscriber, you can have Claude greatly improve your prompts!

In this video I show an example how it takes my simple question and fleshes-it-out which leads to much-better results!

How to Detect when a User stops Typing

Sometimes it is helpful to detect when a user stops typing.   During an AHK Hero group call I presented this question to Isaias.

Isaias developed this script which we, later, recorded this demo video showing how to use it.

Improving People’s Lives: Story #28

Isaias’ brother works at a bank in the Dominican Republic.   He showed Isaias a daily task that took him an hour to complete.

Isaias spent ~3 hours (1 hour to write it and 2 hours of testing) and gave him a script that solved a big part of the task getting it down to 5 minutes to complete.

So, for a given week, he was spending 5 hours but now spends around 30 minutes.

Bar chart comparing task time: manual approach takes 60 minutes, AHK automation takes 5 minutes, labeled 12 X Faster.

What we utomated this week with AutoHotkey #66

Our client’s are getting the majority of our time these days having us code things for them.

In this video I walk through a bunch of what we’ve done for them as well as some new tools we’ve worked on.

Consider joining the AHK Hero club! Members receive 25% off courses, consultations, tutoring, done for you project work, etc.    Currently we have over 345 hours of recordings teaching AutoHotkey that is exclusive to AHK Hero members❗

During this Friday’s call we’re planning to discuss:

  • Help AHK Hero Members with their code
  • Using Claude’s Model Context Protocol & where it is going next
  • Converting Random Code Generator to AHK v2
  • Adding a thosands separator (1,000) to your numbers
  • Forcing the Expression Order
  • Local Smart Switches & triggering them with an API call
  • Discussing AHK and AI in the below image

They also have access to exclusive & pre-released content and a 3 hours a week where we help people with their AHK issues (the Saturday calls are geared towards people new to AutoHotkey.)

P.S. Another great lesson that can be gleaned from the intro paragraph is how working in groups really helps!   It’s one of the valuable aspects of our AHK hero group.  When we get together we all bring different knowledge to the conversation and learn from each other.

We typically have 10-15 people attending a given AHK hero call.  Why not join and see if we can help you with your Automation problem❓
