It’s late, the room is dark, and one of your monitors is blasting light at you.
The brightness setting is already at the bottom. Or your laptop is missing dimming controls altogether.

DimScreen lays a see-through overlay on each monitor, and you dim or brighten it with a hotkey. 😊
Dim the Monitor Under Your Mouse
Put your mouse on the screen you want to change, then press a hotkey:
- Ctrl+Win+Down: 10% darker, down to a 90% dim
- Ctrl+Win+Up: 10% brighter, back up to no dimming
- Each monitor: gets its own overlay and its own level, saved for next time
A small notification on that monitor tells you the new brightness.
The overlay is click-through, so you keep working normally underneath it.
Pick the Overlay Color and Hotkeys
Double-click the tray icon to open Settings. From there you can:
- Change the hotkeys: with a checkbox to add the Win key
- Pick a color: black by default, or any color from the Windows color picker
- Tune the timing: how long notifications stay up, and how often the overlay is kept on top
One heads-up from the original notes: it doesn’t play nicely with video windows.
What’s in the Download
- V2 folder: DimScreen.ahk version 0.0.4 for AutoHotkey v2, plus its Lib folder (NotifyV2 and ScriptObject)
- V1 folder: the original DimScreen by Skrommel, as a script and a ready-to-run DimScreen.exe
The v1 version dims your main screen. You pick a % from the tray menu or use Ctrl++ and Ctrl+-.
To run the v2 script you need AutoHotkey v2.0.2 or newer. Keep the Lib folder next to it.

One thing I’ve learned: your eyes are the one part of your setup you can’t upgrade.
