Nobody Wants a Quicker Version of the Job they Hate News 2026-09-24

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy %Name%,

Are you selling an improvement, or an opportunity?

Here’s the word that cost me lots of money: faster.

  • “This script will make your reports faster.”
  • “This macro will speed up your data entry.”
  • “Automate this and you’ll cut the time in half.”

Every one of those is true. Every one of those is a losing pitch.

Because the second you say “faster,” you’ve invited a comparison. Faster than WHAT?

Faster than the Excel macro they wrote in 2019. Faster than the VBA thing the last consultant built. Faster than the software they already bought and never rolled out.

They’ve got a Dropbox full of “faster.”

They’ve paid for it more than once.

So they’re not pricing YOUR offer. They’re pricing their own disappointment with the last three things that promised the same thing. And they finished doing that before you got through your first sentence.

Improvement is priced against memory. That’s the whole problem.

What “new“ sounds like instead

Now watch what happens when the pitch isn’t faster, it’s something they’ve never had at all.

Not: “This will speed up your reporting.” Instead: “Your reports will be sitting in your inbox before you get to the office, and you’ll never open that spreadsheet again.“

Not: “Automate your data entry.” Instead: “You’ll stop being the person who does data entry.“

Not: “Learn AutoHotkey to save time.” Instead: “You’ll build the tools nobody else at your company can build.“

Same underlying work. Completely different animal.

There’s no receipt for that second version. Nothing in their history to hold it up against, and no scar tissue attached to it.

That’s why “new” commands prices “faster” never will. Not because the code is harder or takes longer to write. Because there’s nothing in their memory for the price to anchor to.

Nobody lies awake at night wanting a slightly quicker version of the job they already hate.

They lie awake wanting OUT of it❗

Most of us write the “faster” pitch anyway, because it feels safer and more believable and more honest. And because it’s what every other automation guy is saying.

Start with what your market is desperate to BECOME, then build the offer backward from there.

Converting a Picture into an App for a Restaurant

A few months back I took a print menu for a local place and converted it to an app for them (but I didn’t record the process.)

So when I decided to repeat the process I hit record…

In this video you can watch me convert a photo of a menu into a working Progressive Web App using Claude in a bit over 30 minutes.

Improving People’s Lives: Story #115

While working on a client’s project I realized she was manually assigning gender to people based on their names and voice.  I had these files which contain 101,338 first names and the likely gender associated with them.  So, in a couple of minutes, we had used a program to guess their gender (but still let the client override it if she wants to.)

What we utomated this week with AutoHotkey #149

I cloned my own voice this week, and I’m planning to do the same for family members to help support their memory down the road.

I also pushed ~12 more web apps live on DirtSimple.app that run entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded anywhere, fixed a nasty OGG length bug in MediaMerger during a six hour transcription run, and taught TextUnderMouse to point at any control and hand you back a working AutoHotkey script.

In this week’s video I walk you through all of it, including the icon animator with 30 styles and a 101,338 First name database I mentioned earlier that figures out Mr. or Ms. on its own.

Fill Out Twelve Business Profiles Without Typing Your Address Twelve Times

Let AI Fill Out Your Business Listings

I spent an afternoon last month watching a friend fill out business listings by hand.

Same business name, typed twelve times. Same address, typed twelve times. Same hours, same phone number, same description, over and over, into twelve slightly different forms that each wanted the information in a slightly different order. By site four he was making mistakes. By site seven he’d stopped caring.

That’s the moment I want to talk about. Not the listings. The typing.

Because that feeling, the one where you realize a computer should obviously be doing this, is the single most valuable signal in your entire work week. It’s your brain telling you there’s time on the table. Most people feel it and push through anyway. 😑

You don’t have to. AI can drive your browser now. It can read a form, understand what each field wants, and fill it in from a document you hand it. Not perfectly, not unsupervised, but well enough to turn an afternoon of mind-numbing data entry into a cup of coffee’s worth of clicking Approve.

This guide uses local business listings as the example, because it’s a job almost every small business needs done and nobody wants to do. But the pattern underneath works on expense reports, intake forms, CRM records, and any other place a human is currently acting as a very expensive copy-paste function.

Now on with the show…

How to Reduce Human Error in Online Business Listings

How to Reduce Human Error in Online Business Listings

Step 1: Build the Source Document

This is the step people want to skip, and skipping it is what makes the whole thing fall apart.

AI can fill out a form beautifully, but it can’t guess your suite number. Give it one clean document to work from and it becomes genuinely useful. Give it nothing and you’ll spend more time correcting it than you would have spent typing.

Put all of this in a single file:

  • Business name, spelled exactly how you want it to show up
  • Street address, including suite or unit
  • Phone number
  • Website URL
  • Business category
  • Hours for every day of the week
  • A short description AND a long one (different sites allow different lengths)
  • Services or products you offer
  • Year founded and the owner’s name
  • Social media links

Then put your images in one folder: logo, a cover or banner photo, storefront shots, interior shots, team photos, and pictures of your actual work. Ten or fifteen good photos will cover every platform in this guide.

The cool thing is you’re not just prepping for AI here. You’re creating the single source of truth that keeps your information identical everywhere, which is the entire point of the exercise.

Step 2: Hand the Typing to AI 🤖

Install the Claude in Chrome extension. It lets Claude see the browser tab you’re on and actually click and type in it.

Then the loop looks like this:

  1. You log in and claim the listing (that part still needs a human, more below)
  2. Paste in your source document from Step 1
  3. Say: “Here’s my business info. Fill out this profile page using it, and check with me before submitting.”
  4. Watch it work, then read what it typed before you approve ⚡

Claude reads the form, figures out which of your details belong in which field, and fills them in. Then you open the next site and run the same loop. Because it’s working from the same document every time, your information comes out identical everywhere. No drift, no “wait, did I put Suite 200 or Ste 200 on that one?”

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t magic and it isn’t unattended. Three things still need you:

  • Logins and verification. Phone calls, postcards, and email confirmations exist specifically to prove a human is involved. That’s the whole point of them.
  • Photo uploads. You’ll generally need to pick the files yourself.
  • The final read. These listings are how customers find and CALL you. Ten seconds of checking beats a wrong phone number sitting live for a year.

Think of it as a fast assistant doing the typing while you stay the editor. That’s still the large majority of the tedium gone, and it’s the part that was making you quit by site seven.

Step 3: The Listings Worth Claiming

Here’s where to point it. Basic setup is free on every one of these. They’re in priority order, so if you only get through the first three, you’ve still captured most of the value.

  1. Google Business Profile – Free
If you do ONE thing on this list, do this one. It controls how you appear in Google Search and Google Maps, which is where the overwhelming majority of local searches happen.
  2. Apple Business Connect – Free
Every iPhone user asking for directions is in Apple Maps. Claim it and control your hours, photos, website, and phone number.
  3. Bing Places for Business – Free
People love to skip Bing. Don’t. It feeds Microsoft’s search and map products, and it’s about four minutes of work.
  4. Yelp for Business – Free
Claim your page so the contact info, hours, and photos are yours instead of whatever a stranger typed in years ago.
  5. Facebook Business – Free
Create or claim your page and make sure the address, phone, website, and hours are right.
  6. Nextdoor for Business – Free/basic
This is where neighbors ask “who do you recommend for…” Being findable there is worth five minutes.
  7. Better Business Bureau – Free basic listing
A trust signal that search engines and AI answer engines cite when someone’s checking whether you’re legitimate.
  8. Yellow Pages – Free basic claim
I know, I know. But the data still flows out to a bunch of smaller directories and aggregators. Search your business name on their site, then use the claim link on your listing.
  9. Foursquare – Free
This one’s sneaky-valuable. Foursquare supplies location data to Uber, Samsung, and a pile of apps you’d never sign up for directly. One claim fixes your info in a LOT of places at once.
  10. TripAdvisor – Free
Essential if you’re a restaurant, hotel, or attraction. Skip it otherwise.
  11. Angi – Free basic profile
Worth claiming if you’re in home services. Heads up: you may already have a profile there that you don’t control.
  12. Trustpilot – Free plan
Claim your profile and start collecting reviews. Trustpilot pages get pulled into AI-generated answers about businesses pretty regularly.

Why the Source Document Matters So Much

Use the EXACT same information everywhere. Search engines cross-check your name, address, and phone number across these sites. When the versions don’t match, the search engine gets less confident about which one is right, and a less confident search engine shows you less often.

That’s the real reason Step 1 exists, and it’s also why handing this to AI beats doing it by hand. A human typing the same address twelve times WILL introduce variation. An AI copying from one document won’t.

Don’t just claim the listing and walk away. Add the good photos, accurate hours, categories, services, and links. Wherever a platform gives you a field, fill it in. A half-finished listing looks abandoned, and an abandoned-looking business doesn’t get the call.

The Bigger Idea 🚀

One thing I’ve learned after years of automating things: the boring, repetitive, nobody-wants-to-do-it tasks are almost always the ones hiding the biggest wins. They stay undone precisely BECAUSE they’re tedious, which means the payoff just sits there for years waiting for someone to pick it up.

Business listings are one example. You almost certainly have five more. The intake form you retype into your CRM. The invoice numbers you copy into a spreadsheet. The report you rebuild every Monday from the same four sources.

Those are all the same shape as this problem, and they’re all solvable the same way: get the information into one clean source, then let software do the moving.

How about you? What’s the task you dread, the one where you catch yourself thinking “a computer should be doing this”? That thought is worth chasing. 😊

Your Next 10 Minutes

Don’t do all twelve listings today. Do ONE: go claim your Google Business Profile right now, with Claude doing the typing. It’s the listing that actually moves the needle, and it’s the cleanest way to see whether this approach clicks for you.

Once it does, the same trick works on every other form in your business. That’s the part I write about: finding the repetitive work you’ve stopped noticing and handing it to a computer for good.
