Run AutoHotkey Scripts by Double-Clicking, No Admin Rights Needed

Run AutoHotkey Scripts by Double-Clicking, No Admin Rights Needed

A friend pinged me last week from his locked-down work laptop. IT won’t let him install anything. No installers, no admin password, nothing. But he can copy files. So he dropped AutoHotkey64.exe onto his machine, wrote a little script to save himself a few minutes a day, and then hit the wall we all hit: double-clicking the .ahk file did absolutely nothing. Or worse, it opened in Notepad. 😀

Have you ever been there? You’ve got the tool, you’ve got the script, and Windows just shrugs at you.

Here’s the cool thing: you don’t need an installer, and you don’t need admin rights. You just need to understand what a “file association” actually is. Spoiler: it’s not magic, and it’s not a program you install. It’s a few lines of text in the registry.

Now on with the show. 🚀

First, kill the myth: nothing gets “installed”

When you double-click a .ahk file, Windows asks a simple question: “Which program opens this kind of file?” The answer lives in the registry as plain text. That’s it. An installer is just a fancy wrapper that writes those text values for you (and usually demands admin rights to do it system-wide).

But the registry has a per-user section that you own. No admin needed. Anything you put under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes applies to you, right away. Windows blends your personal settings on top of the machine-wide ones automatically.

So the whole trick is: write the same text an installer would write, just into your corner of the registry instead of the machine’s.

What the association actually looks like

Two pieces. First, a recipe that says “this is how you open an AutoHotkey script”:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AutoHotkeyScript\shell\open\command
   (Default) = "C:\Portable\AutoHotkey64.exe" "%1" %*
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AutoHotkeyScript\DefaultIcon
   (Default) = "C:\Portable\AutoHotkey64.exe",0

Then you tell Windows that .ahk files use that recipe:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.ahk
   (Default) = AutoHotkeyScript

A couple of things worth knowing:

  • “%1” is the file you double-clicked. The quotes matter so paths with spaces don’t blow up.
  • %* passes along any extra command-line arguments to your script.
  • ,0 is just “use the first icon inside the exe” so your scripts get a proper icon.

Write those, and double-clicking a .ahk launches it. Per-user. No admin. Done.

“But we all use the v2 dash launcher now”

Good catch, and yes, this still works. The modern AutoHotkey v2 install doesn’t point .ahk straight at an interpreter. It points at a little launcher that figures out whether your script is v1 or v2 (and 32 vs 64-bit) and then hands it to the right engine. On my machine the real command looks like this:

"...\UX\AutoHotkeyUX.exe" "...\UX\launcher.ahk" "%1" %*

Same idea, different target. Instead of naming an interpreter in your open command, you name the launcher. You’ve got two honest options:

  • Point straight at AutoHotkey64.exe. One file, dead simple, v2 only. If everyone on your team is on v2 (and these days, who isn’t?), a v1 script just errors out. Honestly, kind of a feature.
  • Use the launcher. Full v1/v2 auto-detection and the Dash. The catch: the launcher needs its friends. You have to copy the whole AutoHotkey folder, not a lonely single exe.

Either way, it’s still just text under HKCU\Software\Classes. No admin.

❗ The one gotcha: UserChoice

Windows 8 added a tamper-proof override called UserChoice. If a .ahk association was ever set before (say someone once picked Notepad), Windows obeys that and ignores your new keys.

And no, you can’t fake it. UserChoice carries a secret hash that Microsoft built specifically so malware can’t hijack your file types. If the hash doesn’t match, Windows throws the whole thing out.

The fix is a one-time manual step: open Settings > Apps > Default Apps, find .ahk, and clear or change it. After that, your per-user recipe takes over. If .ahk has never been associated before, you won’t hit this at all.

The part that might save you the whole effort

Here’s something a lot of people miss: AutoHotkey v2’s own setup already supports a per-user, no-admin install. If you copied the full folder, just run its installer (or open the Dash and choose Install) without elevating, and it writes all these keys into HKCU for you, pointing at the launcher exactly like above.

So if you’ve got the whole folder, you may not need to touch the registry yourself at all. Try that first.

I built a little script to do it for you

For the single-exe, locked-down case (or when you just want it done in one click), I wrote a small AutoHotkey v2 script that:

  • Finds your AutoHotkey automatically and uses the launcher if it’s there, otherwise points right at the interpreter.
  • Writes all the per-user keys (no admin).
  • Adds a right-click “Run with AutoHotkey” entry as a backup for when UserChoice is in the way.
  • Warns you if a UserChoice is blocking things, and tells you exactly how to clear it.
  • Has an uninstall switch to cleanly rip it all back out.
  • Uses zero external libraries, so it runs on any bare machine you drop it on.

One thing I’ve learned over the years: the stuff that feels like it needs “permission” usually just needs understanding. A file association isn’t a privilege. It’s a few lines of text you already have the right to write. ⚡

The takeaway

  • File associations are registry text, not installed programs.
  • The per-user section is yours. No admin required.
  • The v2 launcher just changes which exe you name. Same technique.
  • Watch out for UserChoice. It’s the only thing that can block you, and it’s a one-time manual clear.
  • AutoHotkey’s own setup can do a per-user install if you’ve got the full folder.

Don’t let a locked-down PC stop you from automating. Time is the one thing you never get back, and a five-minute setup like this pays you back every single day. 🤖

P.S. The best automations are the boring ones you forget you set up. Build it once, then let it quietly save you time forever.

AI Noise Removal is Insane❗

I think many of us associate the value of a script by how often we use it however another way to evaluate its “value” might be to figure out how much time and/or money it saves us.

For instance, the Noise removal tool I demonstrate in this video is mind blowing.

It took a course I had that I couldn’t even listen to and cleaned it up so well that I’m even thinking of sending it back to the owners so they can share with their clients.

Getting around Install Restrictions

During a Hero call we discussed how, for people that do not have Admin rights, installing AutoHotkey can be a pain however, as outlined in this video, if you have access to the Microsoft Store, you might still be able to easily install AutoHotkey v2.

It’s a great work-around!   And, if you can’t access the store, a user suggested going to the URL of AHK v2 the Microsoft store and trying it from there!

Keeping AI Busy

I’ve definitely found that, just like with working with AutoHotkey, when working with AI the Human is what slows things down.

Often I’ll have Claude Code working on 4 separate tasks.   Claude will finish one of them but there is no built-in way to have Claude notify you when it finished its task and is waiting for direction.

Of course, we worked around that using our Notifyv2 class.  You check out what we did in this video.

What we 🅰utomated this week with AutoHotkey #134

Ever ask AI to do something, get told “that’s not possible,” and then realize you just asked the wrong question?

In this week’s video I show you how reframing one question unlocked a custom taskbar build, and I also demo a bunch of other goodies like auto-thumbnail generation, clipboard memory, and a screen-hide toggle that makes a window invisible to OBS and Zoom.

AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy,

During a very fun call with a couple of Hero members I realized, in addition to my previous observations that we like to Get Things Done, we have a few other traits:

  • One is that we are “risk takers” and, like me, would rather ask for forgiveness than permission.
  • Another commonality is we’re used to others not grasping our ideas. (It’s one of the reasons we have such fun on the Hero calls.  Like minded people not only “get” your idea but will often offer some interesting tweaks to it.
  • While we don’t care much about who takes credit for our idea, we are adamant about giving credit to other’s ideas
  • We are amazing at “thinking outside the box”. I’ve been a quantitative Stats guy for 30 years but I’m also incredibly creative!

So, if the above sounds like you, you really should consider joining our Hero club.  We have a blast during our calls and always walk away with new ideas.

Creating a CLI for Excel

During a Hero call we showed how we created an Excel CLI tool.

Excel itself is not opensource (and the COM object is enormous) so we decided to just have Claude look at our XL function Library because we put the most common things we used Excel for in it.

Then we just asked Claude to use the XL.exe tool from the command line and Whammo❗

Getting a Path to Files in Notepad

Connie, a Hero member, asked if we could figure out how to programmatically get the file path from Notepad and then add that approach to Get Active Path.

While this seemed niche at first, I realized maybe there was a way that would carry over to other Windows Apps so it was worth investigating so…

Challenge Accepted!

We were able to find a way to do it (but it is just bound to the new Windows 11 Notepad

And they said “Breaking up” is hard to do…

I’m sure, like me, you’ve sat through long meetings, seminars, etc. where you sit for hours listening to non-helpful things
for 90% of the time however there are some
interesting “nuggets” that are worth capturing and sharing.

Unfortunately who has the time to dig through the recordings to break them out❓

Well our Media Segmenter makes that task incredibly easy❗

Improving People’s Lives: Story #97

I’ve been attending Chamber of Commerce meetings in a nearby town.

Many people are very interested in AI but are “afraid” to get started.

Generally I just listen to what they want to use AI for, then point them in the right direction with a few videos that discuss it (or I use NotebookLM to create a custom video for them.)

It’s really great to be able to help people getting started with AI❗
