AutoHotkey Newsletter

Howdy %Name%,

I’m trying to help people see that AutoHotkey still makes a lot of sense for automating the mundane.

Yes, AI can automate a lot but the decision process hasn’t really changed. You still need to choose the right tool for the job.

AI has real downsides: it’s expensive, slower to execute, and not deterministic (meaning the results are not always predictable and reliable (sadly hallucinations are still a thing 😟).

Before AI, I would decide to automate something based on how often I did it or how many people would use it

That logic still holds❗

What has changed is that AI makes it much cheaper and faster to create tools . I use AI all the time to build things—but I rarely use it to actually do the work.

If it’s a one-off task, AI can be fine. Quick, easy, done. That’s the exception .

But if it’s something you’ll do repeatedly , it almost always makes more sense to build a tool (AutoHotkey or otherwise) and let that handle it—rather than paying for AI to do it over and over.

This is something we talk about a lot in the Hero Group.

If you’re wanting to see how easy it is to create a tool to do your work instead of worrying about how many tokens you’re burning , I highly recommend you join.  The first month is just $1.99.

Customizing your System Tray Menu

Connie, a Hero member, mentioned in the system tray of our File XP Search tool it should not say “edit script”.  I agreed but wanted a more sophisticated approach so we show how you can use logic to dictate what items show up in your system tray in this video.

What in the world is a “Smoke test”

Claude has been helping me level up my AutoHotkey code like crazy!  So much so I rarely fully read what it says it is going to do (and with our AHK MCP server it is debugging itself).

Over the past couple of weeks I did happen to notice it kept saying it was going to perform a “Smoke Test”.

So I finally had to ask it “what in the world is a Smoke test” and what other tests should we make?

Check out what it is and the other tests Claude helped me make in this video.

🍪Why Firefox Cookies Taste Best

I was using AI to automate scraping our subtitles from YouTube when Claude mentioned that I should use Firefox to login because the cookies were easier to “borrow”.

I asked Irfan to explain the “why” behind the cookie grab which you can see in this video

Let AI guide you around the Registry and WMI

Last week we showed off a couple more tools that have AI integration.

Our Registry Inspector lets you ask AI where to find values in the Windows Registry

Our WMI Inspector let’s you chat with AI regarding where you would find data via the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).

Both let you select information and create AutoHotkey code to run on and extract on other computers!   Both are amazingly helpful because both the Registry and WMI are insanely large!

Check out the Registry tool in this video.

What we 🅰utomated this week with AutoHotkey #131

In this week’s video I walk you through two weeks of automation wins.

From ditching slow AHK file loops for a C++ XP Style search tool that rips through 10,000+ files in seconds, to a foot pedal that fires off voice prompts to AI, to “Ask AI” buttons baked right into my Registry and WMI inspectors.

I also get into where AHK Script Maker is headed (AI skills + an AHK MCP server so non-programmers can actually build stuff that works), plus the training gig where I’ll be teaching up to 50 people a week at a national agency . The whole thing really comes back to my favorite mantra:

Without the introductory course on udemy.com I wouldn’t have had any idea of how to setup a hotkey to quickly change my Audio output device from speakers to headset–something I do at least a half-dozen times per day. In the forums I found most of what I needed and the course pointed me in right direction for the edits needed to effect this change on my computer. Thank you! — Robert Rosewald

Howdy %Name%,

When I was in Las Vegas my father and I went to lunch and then went grocery shopping.

The restaurant was in the same parking lot as the grocery store so, instead of driving our car 100 feet, we just walked to the grocery store.

As we were walking out my cart suddenly “locked up”.
Apparently, they had a sensor that restricts carts to a very tight area.

While I laughed and told my father to wait with the cart while I pulled the car over I thought how inconvenient it would have been if the same thing had happened to my 85-year-old father.

I feel for the store trying to prevent theft; however, they need to balance their approach so they don’t alienate their paying customers.

When we consult with clients we are very aware of this balancing act.

The vast majority of people are honest.  Generally, you just need some minor restrictions to keep the “mostly honest” people honest.

We typically achieve this by compiling our scripts.   There are much more advanced ways to prevent people from stealing your IP (Intellectual Property).   A few years back, my IP Lawyer ran this great webinar for us!

Improving People’s Lives: Story #78

During my visit with my father I connected with a friend that owned a local Italian Restaurant.

I found out that he’d had some health issues that got him to “rethink” owning & operating a business.

He’d sold his business and was now “selling stock options”.

He hadn’t gotten into using AI yet so I spent about an hour discussing how he could use AI to streamline his workflow.

What we 🅰utomated this week with AutoHotkey #120

This week we made some killer progress on the AHK Script Maker with Irfan going full-time on it for the past three months, and I’m honestly pumped about how much smoother it’s gotten❗

In this video I walk you through all the recent updates to ASM, show off a bunch of our automation tools (including some really cool AI integrations with Claude and Grok), and demo everything from a Stock Portfolio Tracker to a Media merger that’s been speeding up my video workflow.

Plus, I share how we’re using AI to solve some tricky problems that would’ve taken forever to figure out manually!

It’s very challenging to keep up on the newest libraries, so when Rufaydium and back when g33k released chrome.ahk, it was very cool to get the hands on walkthrough of setting it up. G33k is very busy so its not like even he could have time to walk people through use cases etc. The VSC intros were very nice also. Automate my task is frankly an incredible tool as is screen clipping. Dmitri’s tool there that was a work in progress looked incredible too (would love to get my hands on that lol). — Allan Smith

Howdy %Name%,

Eight years ago, on January 3rd, I quit Texas Instruments.

Had I stayed working in Corporate America I would have been, financially, much better off.

But the idiocy I’d put up with may have killed me❗

Those who know me well know I’m only somewhat kidding.

Don’t get me wrong, I had some great bosses & amazing colleagues.

But there were plenty of people that made me wonder how we were able to stay profitable.

I feel the main thing that saved us was that there was an equal amount of incompetency at all of our competitors❗

How about you❓   Have you ever wondered how your colleagues kept their jobs❓

To celebrate my 8 years of freedom I’m marking all of our v2 courses down by 58% until Sunday January 12th.
