AutoHotkey Newsletter March 7th, 2024

Howdy,

I’ve always been a curious person.   While obtaining my undergraduate degree in Marketing I realized that I would ask 95% of the questions in class.  Thankfully I’ve never cared much what other people think of me so I wasn’t “embarrassed” to be asking a question which freed me up to learn!

Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to be asking questions.  By asking questions I was learning “how to learn”.   How to form hypothesis and use logic to prove them right or wrong.

It’s one of the main reasons why learning AutoHotkey came easy for me.  Unlike you, there were no courses on AutoHotkey, nor did I know anyone that knew it.  I had to work through things on my own.

Curiosity may have killed the cat but it made me smarter than the average bear!

For a couple of years I worked with Maestrith (author of AHK Studio) nearly every day.  Being able to watch him code, and ask him questions, was a HUGE benefit.

It’s one of the main reasons why I created the AHK Hero club.  Giving people access to world-class AutoHotkey programmers, for a reasonable price, is an incredible way to make giant leaps in learning!  Now that we have a super-low cost trial period you have NOTHING to lose!  Give it a try I guarantee you will love it!

Real World Example Using the Case Statement

Last week Rizwan asked Isaias for some help on one of the scripts we’re working on.  It involved using the case statement and checkboxes.  Lots of great tips in this video.  We’re almost done with the tool. Should have it out later this week.

A couple weeks ago Irfan was learning how to use Xpath with AutoHotkey.  Isaias did a great job giving him a short tutorial.   If you’re needing to store small amounts of data, Xpath is really great!  You can check out the tutorial in this video.

What is Mulit-Part form data

During last week’s AHK Hero call, someone asked for some tips on working with APIs.   Isaias and I discussed a few basic things and then we both mentioned, if you see “multipart / Form data” you better be ready for a deep-dive.   APIs are fairly easy however dealing with multipart data can be confusing.  While I learned how to use a library for working with them, I wasn’t exactly clear on what I was doing so, a couple years ago, I asked Isaias to walk through the process.  You can get some great tips by watching this video

February 1st, 2024 AutoHotkey Newsletter / 🅰HK News

Howdy,

Back in November of 2022 I shared two short stories about growing up with an over-the-top alcoholic mother.  I didn’t share one of the defining moments of my life in fully grasping that your “family” is more about actions that words.

I was 19 years old and, earlier that day, had “walked my sister down the aisle” on her wedding day.  While the wedding went fine, at the reception, my mother got drunk and screamed at hundreds of guests until everyone, except our few close friends & family, had left.

I was speaking with my childhood friend Paul when my mother came up to me, got about 6 inches from my face, and kept screaming at what a horrible human being I was.  In the background I could see my two sisters huddled together crying their eyes out.  It was that very minute I made the decision to never speak to my mother again (and held to it but that’s not what this story is about.)

I was filled with such rage it is hard to describe.  Not being a violent person by nature I was ready to snap.  I’m quite certain, when I did, I would literally kill my mother.  Then, out of no-where, I see my best friend, Joe Varney, pull up in a car behind her.

Joe never said a word.  He just ran up to the three of us picking up my mother and, without missing a beat, ran back to the car throwing her in the car and driving away.

It took an all of 7 seconds but those 7 seconds changed my life forever❗

Joe and I never talked much about it but I always knew: he had my back and I had his.

Sometimes you need to lean on someone and sometimes that someone needs to lean on you.

While not as extreme, it is one of the reasons we highly recommend having a “coding buddy”.  Talking with other people about your coding problems helps you in many ways.

The obvious benefit is that they may directly “solve” your problem.  However frequently just explaining the problem to someone else is enough to let you realize the solution.

One thing most people don’t take into account though is how much of a psychological support it is to have other people “in the same boat” as you and realize we all have our Strengths and Weaknesses.

It’s one of the core strengths of the AHK Hero club.  Our community knows we’re all at different stages of learning and there is no talking-down or judgement.  We all help each other.

Simple File Renamer

Our Simple File Renamer script is a great tool to have handy!  It’s so easy, anyone can use it!  You can check out how easy it is to use in this video.  This is a v1 script but it still works fine.  We didn’t update it to v2 because it is a pretty complicated GUI.  The tool is actually a stripped down version of our Multi-Rename script which, if you’re a power-user, you might want to check out.

Learn how to use ACC / Peak into Private Consultation

Connie is an AHK hero member and wanted a more-robust way to automate his program: The Master Genealogist.  While we are often able to help people during hero calls, this was a bit too much so we had a private consultation call to create a more reliable solution.  After the call Connie mentioned all the data shared on the screen is public information so I asked if he’d mind if we shared the call with you as there were some great lessons learned during the call that are applicable to anyone using the ACC library.  Thankfully Connie agreed so here is the video which I think you’ll find very helpful!  (Thanks again for letting us share it Connie❗)

BTW- I was able got to read a bit while I was outside. I’m reading a fascinating book: Using Behavioral Science in Marketing: Drive Customer Action and Loyalty by Prompting Instinctive Responses by Nancy Harhut.  I’m not impressed easily but this is, by far, one of the best books I’ve read in years!  Amazing ideas backed with facts and a TON of examples!  I exchanged a few messages with Nancy on LinkedIn and I’m very proud to say this book is a “must read” for marketers & data-science people!  I learned of Nancy while I was watching an interview between her and a friend of mine AJ Wilcox (of B2Linked).

AutoHotkey News December, 14, 2024

Howdy,

Dan Kennedy, a legend in direct marketing, has long advocated for the nimbleness and focus of small businesses over the cumbersome nature of large corporations. His experiences reveal a striking truth: smaller companies can swiftly implement clear, profit-driven goals, a feat often unattainable by their larger counterparts.

At the-Automator, we resonate with Kennedy’s philosophy. Large companies, with their intricate hierarchies and conflicting internal goals, tend to lose the essence of effective marketing strategies in a tangle of bureaucracy. In contrast, small businesses exhibit an admirable agility. They can quickly adapt and embrace direct marketing strategies, leading to immediate and impactful results.

Having worked at large companies for nearly 20 years, I love the fluidness & dynamics of how small business can make decisions and act on things without scheduling meeting after meeting.

Hence, at the-Automator, we too prefer collaborating with smaller companies. We believe in the power of direct, actionable strategies that small businesses can implement effectively. This approach not only ensures our work has a tangible impact but also aligns with our mission to empower businesses where every strategic move counts.

If you’re a small business owner, feel free to reach out to use to understand how you can automate tasks to get more done!  You can reach me directly at [email protected].

What we Automated this week #26

I almost didn’t record this video but, when I ran our script to see how many AutoHotkey files we’d worked on I was surprised to see 287 files…   A big part of this was because we scraped all the v2 example files from the AHK Documentation during an AHK hero call but we did have quite a busy week.  BTW- we’re working on scraping the v1 examples as well and make them a download.
