AutoHotkey Newsletter: August 3rd, 2023 Forget your goals, Do this instead!

I’ve read/listened to a TON of “productivity” and self-achievement courses.  One of the most common things mentioned is to set specific, actionable goals.

I’m reading Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear.  It’s an amazing book!   One of the profound things I’ve learned is the difference between goals and systems.  Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.

Now for a fascinating question: If you completely ignored your goals and focused only on your system, would you still succeed❓

Most of the time I think you would.

If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead.

Goals are good for setting a direction, but systems are best for making progress. Here are 4 common problems when you spend too much time thinking about your goals and not your systems.

  • Problem #1: Winners and losers often have the same goals
  • Problem #2: Achieving a goal is only a momentary change
  • Problem #3: Goals can restrict your happiness
  • Problem #4: Goals are at odds with long-term progress

Ultimately, it is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress.

This is why AutoHotkey is a true “game changer”.  Automating your processes is an amazing way to leap forward and be more productive.  Learning AutoHotkey is something you should have on your calendar!  Check out our AHK Hero club as members are learning from each other all the time!

Backing-up my data before Wiping Windows

Last weekend I (begrudgingly) switched to Windows 11.  Since my Windows 10 was on a small NVME drive (that I wanted to swap out) I had to make sure I got everything off my old system before making the switch.   I asked Isaias to walk through what I might want to grab from the Program Files, User data, etc.   Check out this video where we discuss the process.

Non-API / Non-DOM way to detect if Browser Finished Loading

Isaias and I were on a client call where we didn’t have access to the DOM.  Detecting if a browser has loaded can be a nightmare.  Most people just add an enormous “Rumpelstiltskin” sleep💤.  As you probably know, we HATE relying on sleeps for many reasons.  Isaias had a great idea and I chimed in on how to make it a bit faster / more robust which we demonstrate in this video.  We borrowed from the UIA library.  If you’re new to UIA, you can learn more here.

Increasing Focus & Overcoming Distractions

If you’ve been a long-time viewer of my videos you know I’m a HUGE Dan Kennedy fan.  They’re putting many of his calls / seminars on the Dan Kennedy’s Magnetic Marketing Podcast.  I’ve been enjoying being able to listen to the calls and there are some great learnings about being productive.

Dan Kennedy is a Direct Marketing Genious but he also is a great teacher about getting things done

Here is a link to a video where I go off on a rant because of a book of his I was reading

P.S. I’m loving the Atomic Habits book I mentioned in the intro.  While I still think having goals are important, I’m loving the switch to focusing on the process (and learning to automate as many processes as I can 😁)
