Streamer Tools for OBS Overlays, Macro Keys and a Leaner Windows Rig

Update your OBS text overlay without alt-tabbing, turn a spare keyboard into a macro pad, and clear the Windows bloat off your gaming PC.

You know the drill. You go live on schedule. Chat’s warming up, the game’s loading, and you’re feeling it tonight.

Then Windows decides it’s a great time for a notification. Your overlay still says “Starting Soon” twenty minutes in. You alt-tab to fix it and die in the middle of a fight. Your DMs pop up on screen. The dog starts barking and you can’t find the mute fast enough.

None of that is streaming. It’s busywork, and it’s stealing focus from the game and from your chat. Sound familiar? ❓

Here’s the thing: OBS, Discord and Twitch aren’t the problem. It’s all the little stuff you do around them, by hand, every single stream. That’s exactly the kind of work a computer should be doing for you.

So below are the tools I’d hand any streamer, most helpful first. Most run on your Windows PC, a couple run right in your browser. Click Learn more on any one for the full rundown.

Now on with the show… 😃

Run the Stream: Overlay Text, Macro Keys and Mute 🔴

Everything you’d normally alt-tab or click for mid-stream, moved to a key. Your eyes stay on the game and on chat.

ToolWhat it does for you
OBS Dynamic Banner
Learn more →
Change the text overlay on your stream without opening OBS. Press a key, type “BRB,” “Ranked grind night” or “Giveaway at 100 follows,” hit Enter, and it shows up on stream. It can even auto-greet with “Happy Wednesday.”
Second Keyboard Hotkeys
Learn more →
Turn a cheap second keyboard or number pad into a macro pad, with its own hotkeys separate from your main keyboard. Point the keys at your OBS scene hotkeys, sound effects or banner updates. A budget alternative to a Stream Deck.
Mic Mute
Learn more →
One hotkey mutes your mic, your speakers, or both. Cough, doorbell, sibling yelling from the hallway: tap it and chat never hears it.
Volume Level Adjuster
Learn more →
See every app making sound (the game, Discord, Spotify, browser alerts), each with its own volume, and switch your default device between headset and speakers from a hotkey.
SimpleBlur
Learn more →
Hold a hotkey and blur your Discord DMs, your email or your real name, live, while you’re streaming. (Set your windows in place first; the blur can lag a little if you drag things around.)
Do Not Disturb
Learn more →
One hotkey toggles Windows 11 Do Not Disturb, so a toast with your personal stuff doesn’t slide in on stream.
Webcam Reminder
Learn more →
A bright yellow always-on-top box marks where your face cam overlay sits, so you don’t park the minimap or the chat window under your own head. Your viewers never see it.
Tip: Map your second keyboard’s keys to your OBS scene hotkeys and your Dynamic Banner key. Scene switches and overlay updates without letting go of your mouse mid-fight. ⚡
Tune Up the Rig: Less Windows Clutter Running in the Background 🖥️

Your game and OBS both want every bit of RAM and CPU they can get. Windows ships with a lot of stuff running that you never asked for.

ToolWhat it does for you
RegainRAM
Learn more →
SysMain, telemetry, the search indexer, Delivery Optimization, Edge startup boost, Widgets: one click turns off the background stuff holding RAM you’d rather give to your game and OBS. One click puts it all back.
Remove Windows Bloat
Learn more →
The Copilot button, the Widgets flyout, ads in the Start menu, the “Let’s finish setting up your PC” nag after every update. Tick the checklist and it clears them, then tells you exactly what it changed.
Power Plan Swapper
Learn more →
Hotkey into your high-performance power plan before a session and back to power saving after. Handy on a gaming laptop that lives on battery the rest of the day.
Windows Performance Optimizer
Learn more →
Turns off Windows animations and visual effects in one click. Your original settings are backed up automatically, so you can always flip them back.
Tip: Change one thing at a time. Run RegainRAM (it has an undo), stream a session, see how it feels. Then try the next one. That’s how you find out what actually helps YOUR rig. 😊
Clips, Recording and Socials 📼
ToolWhat it does for you
ClipGrabber
Try it →
Trim the clutch moment out of a long VOD and save just that piece, right in your browser. Ready for TikTok, Shorts or your Discord highlights channel.
Quick Record
Learn more →
Hit record and capture your main monitor without setting up an OBS scene. Good for a quick tutorial clip, a settings walkthrough or a bug report.
Noticeable Text
Try it →
Bold, script, circled or upside-down text for your Discord bio, X posts and socials, even where there’s no font picker.
Hotkey Cheat Sheets for the Apps You Live In ⌨️

Each one comes as a printable PDF plus a sortable spreadsheet. Learn three or four, tape the sheet next to your monitor, and stop clicking around mid-stream.

ToolWhat it does for you
19 OBS Studio Hotkeys
Learn more →
Start, stop and switch scenes without touching the OBS window while you’re live.
13 Xbox Game Bar Hotkeys
Learn more →
The built-in Windows capture shortcuts for recording and screenshots, all on one page.
20 Discord Hotkeys
Learn more →
Jump between servers and channels and handle your voice chat without mousing around.
16 Twitch Hotkeys
Learn more →
The built-in Twitch shortcuts in one place, so you spend less time hunting for buttons on the site.
21 Steam Hotkeys
Learn more →
The Steam shortcuts you’ll actually use, printable for next to the monitor.

One thing I’ve learned: you don’t need to rebuild your whole setup this week. Pick ONE thing on this list that trips you up every stream. Fix that. Then pick the next one.

Less alt-tabbing and fewer “sorry chat, one sec” moments add up fast. That’s more attention for the game and for the people who showed up to watch. That’s the real fun of it. 😃

How about you? What’s the one thing you still click for mid-stream that you wish was on a key? Drop me a note and tell me. I read every one.
